I thought that it might be useful to provide this information for those unfamiliar with the options available.
If you want to send someone a Personal or Private Message (PM) or an e-mail, click on the appropriate icon below their name in a post.
If you can't make out what the icons are, just hover your mouse's cursor over one and a little text box will appear identifying it.
(see example below).
If you want to find out if you have received a Personal Message from another forum member, there are 3 ways.
The first method is to watch the Forum banner when you log in, or when you move between pages.
Just before the photo in the banner expands to occupy the full width, a "Welcome" message appears briefly on the right-hand side.
It tells you how many PMs you have and how many are new.
Unfortunately this appears all too briefly and the speed depends on how quickly your computer loads the page.
On a slow computer or connection you have plenty of time to notice it and read it.
On a fast computer you may not even see it at all.
(See below).
The second method is to look near the bottom right-hand corner of the Home page.
Here you will see a summary of your messages - How many there are and how many are new.
This is always visible on the Home page.
To view your messages, click on the number that indicates the new messages.
This will take you to your inbox and any new message will be at the top.
(See below).
Once in this area you can move between your Inbox and Outbox (sent messages) using the menu across the top of the message columns.
You can reply to messages with or without quoting the original message, and you can delete old messages.
You can also set your preferences for Personal Messages, and this is where the third and best method is available.
At the right-hand end of the menu bar you will see "Preferences". Click on this to open another page.
(See below)
The "Preferences" page allows you to choose to have an e-mail sent to you telling you that a message is waiting for you at the forum.
You can also choose to have a pop-up message appear when you log in.
These options are set using little Yes/No boxes.
