The only thing to spoil my enjoyment is the heavy steering. Can anyone suggest means/cost of retro-fit power assist?

If you don't have power steering Eric, and you have to adapt something else, don't bother with the later model steering box - go straight for the Volvo box.
As Phil might say - try Search set for a million days.

so do you mean replace the Rover steering box with a Volvo one? Hmm! which model then! The one from my V70 wont do for sure!

Just fit the set up from a later car - David Green will supply - you will need the dynamo/pump set up of the 3 litres and pipes/hoses if you do not buy new ones and check the subframe has the alternative powerbox fixings as early ones did not. The catual box was same throughout as wsa the basic pump. The column is the same too.
Rover did a kit to convert early Saloon cars (P/s was optional extra till 1964!) as with disk brake conversions
