Some of them aren't even whitewalls and are just fillets that can be removed. They sit just under the lip of the sidewall

First whitewalls I've liked on P5B's. Also due to roof colour (ivory?) and wheels.

It can look right to have whitewalls (slim band only). There is a Bordeax Coupe with a cream (not silver Birch) roof in Scotland belonging to Cairns Galbraith that looks good with them but its rarely the case IMHO

Hi, i'm completely new to Rovers and just joined the members club and the forum, so please excuse any dumb questions asked? i've just bought a 1969 P5b Coupe and it needs new tyres(and a fair bit more to boot), looking at all of the pics available, I'd like whitewalls but have no idea as to the optimum size, there seems to be quite a range available. What I've gleaned from here is it MUST be radials now from a safety point of view. Can someone just tell me what to buy please? many thanks in advance.

My car has Bridgestone 195/15/80 Radials and I think they're good strong tyres more than adequate for the P5b. They are actually stronger than the old crossplies with higher load ratings. Quite expensive but excellent quality. Masses on search about tyres but the general consensus is 205 is the maximum width and 185 the minimum.I think a 185 tyre looks a bit small to be honest. You also need the maximum profile (height) to avoid the tyre looking too puny in the wheelarches. I think 80 is the max in radials for a 195 width.Anything above a 195 will be a strain on the steering and suspension. Anything above a 205 is too wide for the rim and possibly dangerous.

Just another perspective but my American whitewalls are 235 x 75 x 15
I bought the car with these on in the early 90's and drove it like a gangster back then. The tyres did not come off the rims and fill the arches beautifully.
That said I will be ditching them after a 10 year layup and having found one seriously worn wheel bearing.
I like the look of both whitewall and non whitewall cars so its all personal choice.

No need to worry, most whitewall tyres only have the white band on one of the two sidewalls, so the tyre can be removed from the wheel and remounted with the plain (unbanded) sidewall showing. Thanks - I'd never have thought of that. Learn something useful everyday on here... I think you will find that tyre's now have a direction of travel arrow on them, fitting them like that will be an mot failure,i just had that problem on a motorbike.

I don't think that there are too many directional tyres around, but every tyre I have had fitted on numerous cars over many years have been marked outer and inner. You certainly could not fit them 'inside out' and be legal.

The Michelin XAS was the original asymmetric radial. That's 50 years ago now. Good grief! Where did the time go?

I too have just fitting 225/75 whitewalls. they really rock the look and so far I've had no problem on rubbing.
