Well as with the rest of the car,if it unbolts, change it,restore it ,powder coat it.......or that nice tin of hammerite smooth.. The engines out,ive had a clean up,but the loom ,well the cloth braided wires really are pretty hard to distinguish. Before i wash awaY the colour, anyone know of anything that brings them up? (before i end up renewing these as well). ITS so i can wire stuff back up,and not so much it,look better..............or so i keep telling myself!!! thanks all..........

Bio washing powder will clean the palstic and textile coverings but if the textile is partially rotted it will be be hardly worthwhile when it goes up in flames on reconnection

You can buy proper loom tape from vehicle wiring, so if the wiring is sound then this tape makes a realy good job of it.

Beware usingh ordinary PVC electric tape as the glue on this will soften with underbonnet heat and oil fumes and it will come unstuck leaving a stick black mess

Yes you are right, but this stuff is proper loom tape that will stretch tight around the cables it has no glue on it, so you can just put a spot of glue on the end if it needs it.

I know - I have used it for 40 years! (and Vehicle Wiring products which is just down the road)
When winding it on it is important to keep under tension and overlap it properly.
Looking at the pictures I would be relunctant to retape some of that old fabric covered cable though.
I can recommend Autosparks for a new period loom - that too is just down the road - I have no financial or social connection with either firm either!

I use the plastic pre-formed type of cable tidy. Black & spiralled, it looks very neat & if you add cables you simply unwrap it, add your new wire then re-wrap it again. Not original but very efficient.

WD40 is an effective cleaner for non-texiles in engine bay. I like this most as it doesnt promote rust any further like water does. Mark
