Hi Geoff, I am new to the tyre debate, I need five 185/80/15, and all I can find are tyres that are listed as van tyres, is there a problem fitting these type of tyres, both in terms of legality and handling? The load and speed rating are fine for a Rover P5 3 litre. Regards Chris Hi, I have sent you a private message. Geoff

As mentioned earlier on in this thread i am now running on a set of Maxxis white banded tyres. I am very happy with them, they look great and the ride is lovely. I bought 5 in total as my original 48 year old cross ply spare was totalled albeit new looking and never used but it had to be replaced.
Regards,

Hi, what's the current thinking/availability on tyres? trawling fleabay and the usual online places doesn't seem to throw up much other than Light Van, cheapo stuff that doesn't fill me with confidence or the 250 quid a corner remanufactured stuff.
My new acquisition will probably need a new set as I have no idea how old the ones that are fitted are.
Thanks in advance
Ian

The best tyres unless you are going to do high mileages are now Ovation 185/80 x 15R radials at 33-36 psi. I now have these on our P5B and P4 and they handle well. They are not van tyres either! www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/ovation/vi-682/

OK Thanks, I was a little worried as I hadn't heard of them before, is there a steer to what load rating we need? I've found some Yokohamas but they are only 82 rated ( 475kg each) which is a bit close to the weight of the P5 and I guess with that heavy lump up front of a 3 Litre they might end up with more than they should on them .

I will look tomorrow - quite a few others use these now. The P5 manual is heavy our Mk2c auto Coupe is even more so

It 1s speed rating that counts, not weight.

Just looked up Ovation and they are made in mainland China.

I have just sent an email to Vredestein UK to enquire about the supply of 'our' size tyres. They are my preferred option, I must say.

I had a new set of Maxxis white banded tyres fitted to mine recently and they look and handle very well indeed. I have used this brand before on other cars too i have owned.
Cost me fitted £500 for 5.

Both Vintage and Northants tyres stocked the premium makes last time I looked. Longstone did once. Very expensive though and if not used very often the rubber hardens/cracks well before the tread wears out

David, I want the correct 185/ 80/ 15, which have been available until recently. Found these www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres-185-80-15/?t=TTrouble is that the cheap ones are too cheap and the expensive ones too expensive, although a pair of tyres for my bike is about £150, but they have a much higher speed rating How can they make a tyre for £42 ? When I had a set through the club one of them developed a bulge in the tread. If I am on the motorway at 70 mph I want to be certain that the tyres are up to the job. A P5 with a failing tyre at speed is totally uncontrolable, unlike my motorbike that I rode the 50 miles home from London with the rear tyre nearly flat ! Sam, make sure they tell you the date of manufacture as a tyre has a shelf life of 6 years, but 10 when it is on the car.

Thanks George, am aware of tyre 'life'. Your comment about making for £42, well we are talking of China, where wages are reduculousy low.

Just fitted a set of 185 80 15's. I ordered radar dimax classics from camskill.
They are also made in China but look classic with little branding and original tread style. I did a lot of research first as some reports of poor balancing were online but my local tyre bay had no issues. Not had a chance to put any miles on them yet but pleased so far. They also do a 205 80 15 which tempted me but come in larger than the original rolling radius.
