Hello all, I found your site whilst googleing for Rover P5 parts.
My customer has a 3 litre P5 which has been off the road for (i think) 25 years.
He took the head off to de-coke it and snapped two of the head studs, it was left in a nissin hut with a leaky roof, consequently the engine is heavily seized
I only started work on the car yesterday but got a fair amount done already, including reoving bumper/front wings/grille/radiator/anti-roll bar and steering idler link(to get the sump out) the bores had been oiled and soaked and the engine had been tried on the handle in the past month and the owner had filled them with plus gas recently so i heated them with an with oxy acetylene torch until they caught and we let them burn away for a good time
Still no joy, the belts were very brittle so i snipped them off to save having to turn the ancillaries with the crank but still no joy, blocks of wood etc and nothing.
Yesterday evening i drained the oil and took the sump off and tried drifting the pistons from below with a timber drift and a club hammer but no movement.
After removing the water pump and exhaust manifold and seeing the ammount of corrosion inside i am erring towards sourcing a replacement engine
Will see how this one goes, this car isnt a full on restoration and the budget is tight.
The brief was as follows:
un-sieze engine, remove broken studs, decoke exhaust valves (seized to the guides by the look of them) clean and check cylinder head and refit with new gasket and make sure the engine is good.
Then put the car onto my car roller and bare metal the underside, repair sills and jacking points, paint and underseal and then rebuild brakes and fit new brake pipes, find and fit replacement exhaust, empty sludge from fuel tank, run new fuel lines etc etc
Get it MOT'd and then try and cut the paint... the owner isnt too fussed about the paint but just wants to drive it whilst he still is able too as his arthiritus in his arms and hands is getting worse
