I am thinking of having a go at restoring my own interior wood - door woods only due to impact of 40 odd years of weather, grubby fingers and previous owners' 'restoration' attempts. The dashboard is fine.
I've done a search on the forum and read all I can find including having a look at other websites via the links given. All useful stuff but.... does anybody know whether the wood fitted to our cars was ever dyed or even oiled from new? Or is it just bare wood highly lacquered and polished?
I've stripped my door wood trim back to bare wood and will gently sand and grainfill it before lacquering and polishing. The wood itself is in good condition. But it needs to match the dash, hence the question.
If it needs to be dyed then obviously that presents a problem getting an accurate match, hopefully someone will know the answer. It is a mk3 3litre with the cherrywood rather than the earlier walnut.
Thanks.

You will find it impossible to match the original finish but good luck, there is some info if you do a search. I would start again and do it all with modern materials
