Sorry David, that makes perfect sense to me when you read the story.
They would have a reason for discounting fares to a particular destination.
When I lived in Singapore in the late '70s, there were heavily discounted air fares for regional destinations. Singapore to Bangkok and return, or Singapore to Manilla to Kuala Lumpur and return, etc. But you had to remain away for at least 10 days. In this case it was a tourism thing. You get a cheap fare but you spend money on accommodation. If you tried to fly back to Singapore before the 10 days was up, you had to pay the difference between the full fare, plus a fine.
We used to get around it by flying to KL rather than Singapore, then catching a taxi back home. Took all night in the cab, but only cost the equivalent of about AU$20. You just left the KL to Singapore portion of your ticket unused.

Agree Warwick but if the fine is twice the standard fare (ie not twice the heavily discounted fare) then it looks heavy and unfair (unfare?). I also wonder why they got off early without realising the consequences. Had they been forewarned in a normal print size. BTW do your mini trains cost less than the normal ones? david I thought that Stagecoach was (meanwhile) a bus company. Do they really run trains?

Peter, they certainly do. Brian Souter and his sister Anne Gloag (Stagecoach) jumped onto the band wagon when Mrs Thatcher de-regulated the National Bus Company (NBC) in the 1980's I actually met Mr Souter when he visited our bus depot in Biggleswade. It was at that time called United Counties. Two years later the depot was flattened and flats were built in it's place. All the buses that were with the NBC were green in colour. In Biggleswade we drove the Bristol VR. I even drove Green Line from Cambridge to London Victoria. After de-regulation pay and conditions nose dived so I hung up my badge and left.

OK now I understand. The secret is not to let them visit you obviously!
I used to love everything Bristol (the buses that is). Always had lots of character.

I understand what you say Warwick but this was only two stops and a designated one at that, not a different country. Then to double the charge seems severe. The problem may be lack of competition from other train and coach/bus companies. For example a train from Bristol to Bath (approx 6 miles) has the dubious honour of being the most expensive fare in the world. With current pressure to use public transport, the companies don't seem to be very encouraging. A similar situation happened a few years ago when my wife and son was to join me on holiday in Sweden. The cost of a single airfare with KLM was around £850 for them both, but for a return it was £450 - so we booked the return and didn't use it.

Certainly David, if they weren't warned of the consequences of breaking the conditions of the cheap fare, then it isn't fair.
Glenn, so you'd know Reg Varney then.

KLM are terrible. They are always fare fixing. Recently had an experience where I could buy KLM tickets cheaper from a different company.
Good clip Glen! Missed it the first time around!

They recently re run the series on ITV 3. Funny enough Blakey is still alive as is Anna Karen (Olive) Bob Grant (Jack) committed suicide and Michael Robbins(Arthur) had cancer. Have a great day I really must get out more.

Close but no cigar. Warwick, I wish you were over here or I was over there. After a few beers I think we could put the world to right.
