That settles the question I posed on FB (p5 owners group) this morning… the wires downstream of the fusebox were plastic coated from new, which should help the auto electrician find the fault with my headlights.

Hi Boz, you'll find, if you thoroughly clean all the electrical connections, switches, fuses, bullet connectors to bright contacts and all earth/ground contacts (yes, scratch the paint off at these contact points to bright metal) that the lights and indicators will function as designed.
A Side Note. Given the age of these vehicles now, who has ever bothered to thoroughly clean the contact connections on the large underbonnet fuse box? I'm assuming perhaps 2% of the current owners, but stand to be corrected.
Most electrical issues are due to high resistance on the electrical connections.

Tomato Ketchup or household Ammonia leave in soak overnight and it will come up like new :-) if you use Ammonia rinse in water straight away :-)

And if you use tomato ketchup, wipe it off with hot chips.
