Thought i would post a picture of the new 4ltr lexus engine in place, Its only sat on blocks at the moment, had to remove steering box so will be converting to rack and pinion and the subframe needs a bit of massaging to give clearance under the bell housing.

Well gone. Looks great. Strange to see...I have owned both cars but never had the engine of one inside the other!
Any brake changes planned?!!

Nice bit of work there. I take it that the BW65 has also been dumped?

The wiring is not as bad as it looks, theres 120 wires to the ecu, but only a handfull need connecting to the cars loom. The hardest part is identifying the ones that are needed. The BW gearbox has also gone as the lexus has a nice 4 speed gearbox with overdrive. The whole thing is 1 inch shorter than the rover/BW unit but a lot wider. Will be using the lexus power steering pump with a rack ( dont know where from yet) and a diesel mondeo radiator with twin electric fans. First job now is to relieve the subframe crossmember a little and make up engine and gearbox mounts.

Nice little project! It's always more than it appears to the untrained eye. Keep us posted as you progress. These tasks are character building. Happy wrenching. ~ Vince

As you can see from the picture, the old mount rails have been cut out and will be replaced by 2" box sitting outboard of the old ones. Thats the only mods needed to the subframe. The gearbox sits nicely in the cavernous tunnel and will just need new mounts fabricating, and the prop coupling changing. Dave Mac Props are going to do the prop work for me. The new engine is sitting 30mm lower and about 20mm further back which is leaving loads of room for the rack and pinion set up.

As one of the few people who have had a LS400, whose engine mysteriously overheated and blew up after 11 months in my ownership I wish you well. Looks a fascinating project. Our Lexus is still sadly missed. The lump will suit the old girl really well. Option to fit a turbo, is there, too, BTW. Kits are readily available, but I wouldn't want to give you ideas!

Nice to see some adventures work takeing place, I plan something along similar lines and am interested in your plans for the injection fuel pump and return line and wonder if the fuel tank will be replaced or modified. Please keep suplying detailed pictures please,it's very interesting. It should go like a rocket with 280 BHP and probably use less fuel than the rover engine. Good luck.

Spivomatic, I plan on keeping the original fuel tank with an external fuel pump in the boot- probably a bosch 044. I still have an inertia switch in place( from a rover 400) left over from the facet pump. Fuel lines( flow and return) in 10mm hp pipe will run down the passenger side to the engine. That will be enough to get it going although i may need to add a swirl pot if the cornering becomes a bit spirited. ;D ;D

Question; in the picture of the top of the gearbox, have you cut the top from the transmission tunnel ?

Spivomatic, nope. Theres a ring of 20 or so bolts around the tunnel and then it just lifts off. It looks to be cut flush with the floor in the picture but it really still has a lip of 4" - 5" all the way round. It is a huge hole though.

Well i never new that, amazing what you can learn on this forum, by the way iv'e found this link www.lextreme.com/misc.html that may help with your wiring conversion. There is a whole section on engine wiring. I know from experience that unused inputs (ie aircon etc)must be taken either high or low voltage as this can alter timing/fueling maps, and ultimately performance.Daughnting but worth it.

Quick update on the progress so far. Will post some piccies at a later date. Propshaft is back and refitted after cut n shut with lexus coupling fitted. Gearbox mount has been fabricated and fitted. Engine mounts have been fabricated. Steering rack position finalised, still needs mounts making. I now know where everything is going to go ( i think) . I hoping to crack on with it once the kids are back at school.

Hi, what steering rack are you using? I am thinking of converting mine to rack and pinion and it would save me time wandering round the breakers yard with a tape rule. Not that I dislike doing that, but I can't seem to find the time nowadays. Thanks Colin.

Ian Gray (Essex Rep) has that conversion on his car. ALthough he didn't do it you might get some good reference from it?

Have had to take on a second job so have been working 7 days a week. As a result progress has been slow. Track rods are being modified as we speak to match the bmw rack to the rover outer rod ends. Have made up rods to operate the gearselector on the lexus box with the original rover lever so it will look standard inside. In the middle of making brackets to mount the ecu in the passenger footwell. The last major thing to do ( apart from wire it up !) is to sort out the exhaust.

Quick update with pictures of engine mounts, The mounts are fully boxed in with a captive nut for original style engine mount rubbers. I have also gained an interceptor rear axle to fit at some stage. This is a picture from last summer as the car was before i started the engine swap, Does this mean i get moved to the outcast, sorry, modified section?
