Crossplies, i thought long and hard about this one. There is no way to simply sum it up. I started looking at the pictures from the national and nice as they are, i only looked at four before my interest wandered. They all look the same. I want something different. Its also a challenge for me to see if i can make my ideas work.

Getting there slowly, Brake servo relocated, just need to make up new brake pipes when the engine is out for the last time, Cooling system header tank from a subaru sited, MAF sensor and air filter in place, mods to grill finished. Still need to find a home for the power steering header tank, finish fabricating the exhaust, refit the fuel tank when it comes back from having a sump fabbed and fitted, fit new fuel lines and wire in. Simple.

That's an impressive job you're making, redsunbeam.
I saw on the pictures that you blinded the holes for the indicators and bumper brackets, and removed all the chrome work. Do you want to do a "chrome free" car? what plan do you have for the interior?
I have a Coupé needing a restoration and I'm thinking of remove all the chromes (including bumpers), put a grille mesh as you did, respray it with an non-standard colour and give it Rover SD1 Vitesse type Wheels. I'll leave original engine and transmission.
I know it would be as costy as a proper restoration, and some members won't understand it but it would be "my" car. I have a P5 Coupé in good shape, and I want another one, different I don't know if i'm understable

Nice work redsunbeam. Looks like a great fit. Look forward to you firing it up.
As an aside what radiator are you using?
Also consider not mounting it rigidly (as is the original radiator) I found on my conversion that the tanks were being flexed over time (by body movement) and causing irritating 'weeping' leaks between the core and tanks)

Enigmas, The radiator is from a diesel mondeo with twin electric fans from an st220 mondeo. Ive mounted it with the original rubbers the same way ford did in the mondeo. It has a pin through the centre of a large rubber bush that allows it to flex a little in all directions. One thing ive learnt along the way is to imitate the manufacturers ( most of the parts ive used are from other cars rather than universal aftermarket stuff, it tends to be better made and much cheaper ) Their huge R&D budgets must count for something. Having said that, i am using an aftermarket fan controller. Cyf, The interior is remaining as standard looking as i can, its taken an age to get the gear shifter linkage right so that i can use the rover selector with the lexus box. I am having the original speedo converted to electronic so it looks original. Some things like the central locking wont be seen anyway.

You're doing a great job with the car Redsunbeam. I had a aluminium radiator made at great expense and it's proved to be a constant irritant with small weeping leaks. Your solution with the mondeo radiator is a good one...especially since it's from a diesel.
Mounting radiators rigidly (as per the original) is fraught with trouble if you considering mods like yours.

An interesting contrast in radiator mounting can be seen between the P5B and the Range Rover of the same period.

An excellent thread, first time I've seen it.
I've always been a big fan of the original look, but this is excellent work . Looking forward to seeing the end result.
What are the wheels from originally?

Tonys, wheels are from a jeep grand cherokee, i think it was a 2002 model - everso cheap. Cyf, i am removing the bumpers and the side stripe and using the sidelights as indicators. Ive had a play with the back end too, the two rear reflectors are now the reversing light and a fog light and i am using light bolts for the number plate.

Thank you. I know it's a thread about the engine but I'm very interested by the bodywork as it's the modifications i want to do in the future.

Corbin, i have to ask - what makes you think i'm not aware of the rules and regs regarding radically altered vehicles?

I have no idea if you do or not. I admire what you are doing. I myself have been scared off from modifications of your complexity. As it stands at the moment I'm not sure if these regulations are being implemented now( hope not) but fear they may soon. The reason for my post was to give some in-site that may be planing mods, and may encounter unforeseen expense as these regulations may not be general knowledge.

Hi, Corbin. I am not having a go, But I take your point. As you alluded to with your link and the points system, Redsunbeam has exceeded the minimum number of points. At least nowadays it is quantifiable, there was a time when some people were taking Range Rovers, shortening the chassis, perching series 1 Land Rover bodies on top and nailing the series 1 number plate front and rear and driving it tax free. Like lot's of regulations they are not rigidly enforced but are there when things go wrong.

Interested to see if you the Jensen axle in yet and how you managed it. Have you got the 2.88 or the 3.0 ratio. Reg

I can't help but chip in here. Modifying or building a car to your vision is a passion and can be very addictive. It's an element of individual expression and is an end in itself. There's a whole counter culture 'out-there' building interesting, weird and unique stuff whether its cars, motorbikes, boats or whatever. There is so much conformity in the civilised western world these days that many people have lost the ability to express themselves either in words or maleable materials. It's often about the journey and the challenge...and if the will is there, it can be registered. Enough of that. Fear is the enemy. Maintain your passion for this project Redsunbeam. I'm enjoying it!

Close enough to running that i thought the old girl deserved her new insert for the tunnel cover. The V8 logo is embroided in. One of the old boys at work has an embroidery business on the side and did it for me.
