July 21st 2012 Foxhall Stadium Ipswich
An all Rover banger race. It has been known for cars to 'disappear' around the time of banger racing. As this is a Rover only event, then you should be even more vigilant.
Amended thanks to Dave Green

now now gents, ever heard of the saying "tarnished with the same brush" my 2 p4s for racing were purchased by a classic car guy who has 5 others for the road and HE advertised them on a banger racing website, the majority of cars i buy are via ebay where oddly enough classic car guys can buy them aswell!!! and us banger drivers have no more money than the next guy bidding. On ovalchat we have a topic for stolen motors which people post and us banger drivers do our upmost to help track down any stolen car as we dont want to be "tarnished with the brush again" Maybe we should tarnish all classic car owners as "snotty old people with tartan rugs on the back seat" but oddly enough alot of banger drivers own classic cars... including me with a p5 3litre coupe many years ago.....

I looked into this subject of cars being nicked for Banger Racing and got very little feedback. How many of us who use this site have had their pride and joy stolen? Sure, their may be the odd incident of a theft but overall if you use an immobilizer and some common sense you should be able to keep your car as safe as it is possible. If this is still not enough as the car may be lifted with a HIAB, fit a Satellite Detection System . Common sense is an excellent deterrent. After all it is a personal choice. I will be fitting mine with a SDS.

My friend in the village told me his metal supplier up north rented a secure compound where he kept his stock in his van and in a container, a couple of weeks ago he went to pick up his van it had gone and so had the container the fence was still intact The moral is if they want it make it difficult as you can for them my property is protected with IR beams, PIR Alarms and a Digital CCTV system which has pre-set hot spot alarm areas which if breeched phone a number and set off an alarm. The price of steel at the moment your pride and joy may not go round a track

I just sold my old P5B a few weeks back to a father & son who wanted it specifically for this event in July!!! I got a pretty good price considering the condition - he said it was the most he'd ever paid for a banger - they were a bit reluctant to tell me what they were going to do with it at first, they thought I'd be offended ;D!! - but we've decided to keep in touch and they've invited me to go along in July and watch the old girl in action!! And win it, obviously.

My hobby for the past 24 years has been BANGER RACING. I am also a serving Police Officer and have been for 28 years now. I also own a two tone blue P5 3litre saloon with less than 30 thousand miles on the clock so I reckon I can offer fairly constructive and informed comments from various angles on this years Rover meeting at Ipswich. The immediate "suggestions" that so many Rovers will go missing to boost the numbers of on track participants is something that so many people will suggest but my thoughts are this..... The same "suggestions" ( some would say accusations ! ) were bandied about in the lead up to the Westy meeting at Arlington last year BUT , did the number of Westys going missing suddenly increase ? Not as far as I'm aware from my day job, and surely there would be comments/uproar in the relevant monthly and weekly magazines denouncing the Banger racing fraternity if there had been any noticeable rise in the thefts of the cars ? I am personally aware of people paying large amounts of hard earned cash ( sometimes ending in three 000's ) for cars to race. I am not aware of any that were stolen to be raced ( although clearly this could have happened ). Surely the more sensible, level headed people will realise that the stealing of cars does and can happen for racing, but that that is NOT the norm. MOST people that race spend their own money buying the cars that end up on the track. People spend HUGE amounts to race, and cars for specific meetings have been costing more and more over the years but most racers are prepared to pay that cost to do something they truly enjoy. There are benefits to the owners clubs in so many ways as has been proved over the years by so much of the stock that is currently held by various club members, myself included ! I have raced P5's and P4's and have parts from both stashed away. The P5 parts will keep mine going for a few years yet hopefully. All of the cars that will be raced will be stripped to the bare minimum, all of the trim, glass etc will be available to people who can make good use of it ! The running gear will be available after the meeting to keep plenty of cars on the road. Surely its a win/win situation ? The cars that will be raced WILL look great but the arguement that they are too good to be on the track is not one that is justifiable or acceptable. Be brave, come and have a good look around them in the pits and see how poor they are under the shiny paint and signwiting ! Well thats my first post on the forum and I look forward to any discussion that this causes !!!! Regards to all, Phil.

Hi Phil, welcome to the FORUM Some good points made. As I have posted in my previous thread I got no evidence of wrong doing from the Banger Racing Fraternity. There is probably the odd exception. I would say the vast majority of vehicles used are basket cases as you mentioned. Potential thefts can come from all quarters of the criminal fraternity....Stolen to order comes to mind for good to excellent/ A1 examples. As you say you are a serving Police Officer it is somewhat comforting to read your e-mail. We should never rest on our laurels though. As Shaw Taylor said "Keep 'em Peeled"

Great photo Glenn. Didn't realise there were Rover only banger races.
Guess they can withstand more punishment than most even with the weight disadvantage.
Hope Phil Plod doesn't spring into action. Still at least you have a well- balanced dog to protect you when 202 arrives at your front door!

Actually I used to go and see old 3 litres being raced at Long Eaton Stadium in the late 1960's, just down the road which finally closed in the mid 1990's

On my way home from work today on the M25 passed a White P4 on one lorry and then a P5B saloon on another, presumably on route. I can't help but feel a bit sad but an owner can do with their car what they wish. I presume most are to far gone but suspect many years ago some lovely one's went the same way.
Do they ever have an all Allegro day?

Do they ever have an all Allegro day? I've just been speaking with some people and one guy has spent 3 weeks welding a P5 just to get it to a level he could race with so I can't see that it would have been good for anything else but the track. Another guy has a P5 which owes over £1700!!! Hope he last more then 1 lap or that's a lot of money wasted

... Do they ever have an all Allegro day? - spoke to the manager at the stadium about that - apparently Allegros break up too easily, so not good car choice for banger racing! hmmmmm - feel a challenge coming on ...........

I know very little about the banger scene although I used to watch them in Cornwall with my Dad back in the very early 70's.
I don't know how many P5's were totally destroyed in that video but there must be a finite supply of cars that are suitable for racing?
It's like the equivalent, in motoring terms, of Burke and Hare the body snatchers!

I thought I was younger than you! I used to watch them being trashed at Long Eaton Speedway in the late 1960's. This only closed in the late 1990's and I collected some useful parts up till then from the racers when they "prepared" them.
Of course there were the big Mk10 Jags/Westminsters/Princesses etc as well which dwarfed the P5's
