;)For those of you who would like to check the licensing status of your car or perhaps check whether a potential purchase is a ringer or not visit the above site and go to VEHICLE ENQUIRIES You need to enter the registration AND the vehicle make as on the register eg a Mini could be down as MINI, AUSTIN or MORRIS. If your P5 does not come up entered as a ROVER then I suggest you contact the DVLA onthe above site straightway! I have used it to check past cars as it indicates whether or not its SORN'ed or currently licensed or not. A previous Rover P5B I sold as a good runner with long MOT in 2000 is unfortunately SORN'ed although still apparently with the person I sold it to going by the date. The names and addresses are not of course given to the general public! Although I asked this on the Old Board is anyone out there with a Silver Birch P5B saloon MDU 817F It really is a useful and fasinating site as the rules are tightening up on such matters so you really need to ensure you get the new style V5 by June this year for all cars you have and therefore SORN them if applicable /me

I seem to remember reading that only cars that are currently on the road or SORN'd should be getting the new V5s, therefore if you have a car thats been off the road for much longer you can just ignore the whole new V5 and SORN situation.
The danger of declaring SORN on one of these laid up cars is that if you ever forget you get slapped with a fine!

Quite correct and the DVLA have said that whilst they want to encourage all vehicles to be reregistered so that they have the new V5 there are no immediate plans to have all cars done.
However the whole purpose of this exercise is to update and "cleanse" the database to reduce fraud and control motorist and anyone who has an old car so that they can extract more cash from them
