We have just taken on a P5 to paint. Partially repaired elsewhere, we are finishing it off. We don't know what colour it is though. Unfortunately digital cameras and computer screens don't always give an accurate representation. If any one knows what colour it is or can at least narrow the search down I would really appreciate it. Attachments:

I am guessing it is a V8 version? A P5B 3.5. If it is a P5 3 litre straight six there were a far greater selection of colours.
If it is a P5B n the colour is most likely Admiralty Blue. If you do a search (make sure you put 900 days in the timescale option) you will find the colour codes listed on this forum

Thanks for the reply. It is a P5 and not quite as dark as Admiralty blue.

If its a mark 3 it would be Admiralty blue (1967) steel blue for the rest of the mark 3's. Mark 1 & 2 would be light navy, and of course coupe's vary adding steel blue

It's a MK II and has had a previous respray, so the colour on the car might not even be the original one. I'm thinking light navy at the moment. Does the club have a register of P5's with the colour they should be?

Can't you take out the rear seat and find some original paint? then use a swatch to match up?

The only Blue listed for a MK2 is Steel Blue I would say at the moment it is Zurcon Blue ish! as Steve says it's hard to tell on a PC

Old Skool Autos Paintwork, alternatively you could pop along to this years national. There are over 100 cars booked in, so you should find the 'right' colour there and enjoy a Sunday out www.roverp5club.org.uk/national2012.html

If its a MK2 it will have a painted fuel filler cap. Polish that up and a good paint supplier should be able to colour match

Agree John but it would be a starting point plus you can confirm the respray then. It still could by steel blue but of the wrong shade, example Rover Zircon blue in P5 and SD1 same colour in name but 2 different colours

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. After leaving the P5 for a few weeks I have finally got it in paint. It's taken alot of preparation getting all of the panels straight ready for paint. One front wing was new old stock but very rusty and dented. Three doors have had new metal from halfway down before I started work on the car. Rear wings, boot and bonnet had dents from normal use. The customer liked the colour that it was on the outside. There were three different blues in total on the car and no original paint at all. I took a panel to the paint suppliers and matched up with blue swatches to as close I could get. The photo doesn't do it justice. It's a nice old looking blue and suits the car quite well. If it were my own car I would have painted it in a Rover colour from that era and perhaps with a grey roof to break up the blue. Got alot of flatting and polishing to do now to get an even better finish than the good 'gun' finish that I already have. Then it's back to the owner for fitting up.
