OK........ While i was stripping my old MKIII, 3 litre, down to base metal a few years ago (the one i painted matt black), i noticed that the doors had been surface leveled using a white filler, that had been skimmed over large areas. As i was stripping said filler away, i couldn't help but notice that it had a very unusual yet distinctive odor to it... a kind of sweet smell, yet at the same time, it reminded me of either a dentists shop, or hospital, as it had a somewhat clinical nip to it. Can anybody tell me what that stuff was please? or at least what cause or created the smell, as its been bugging me! I got a waft of said smell a while back, and its taken me ages to remember where i recall it from... and now that i know where, i would like to know what. ....................................................... Have you missed me

Beauty...like olfactory pleasures is in the eye or should I say nose of the beholder...one person’s sweet scented smell is another's rancid remembrance.

Indeed.... but what was it?
Someone has to know... i mean its nothing like the p38 fillers that are used today, as the smell is completely different

Was this in the 60's mate? Are you sure it was filler on a car? I am sure Mr Policeman will believe you? ;-)

Polyester styrene resin perhaps? They have a distinctive sweetish smell. (error corrected)

Someone has to know the ins and outs of the Rover production line though... i've seen some seriously inane stuff on here in the past

Polyester resin perhaps? They have a distinctive sweetish smell. So what would it be in the polyester resin that would smell like that?

No idea. It was just a recollection from the distant past of a distinctive smell with a hint of sweetness.

Who knows what has been put on cars over the years? Well, it was on a p5 rover, so i'm guessing some form of "Sheldon" from within the community would know!

Polyester styrene resin perhaps? They have a distinctive sweetish smell. (error corrected) I was cleaning out the shed on the weekend and found an old tube of Plastibond, the stuff I was thinking of. It smells just as I remembered it, but it's styrene, not polyester.
