Hi, Inspired by Andy's rebuild of a BW35 gearbox, I decided to rebuild one myself to replace the one in my '66 Daimler V8. I was lucky to find a box locally (Phoenix, Arizona) from a Volvo P1800 - supposedly working when removed. Having stripped it down I have found some broken parts, the most serious of which is the rear oil pump. The inner rotor is broken into pieces. Does anyone know from where I could get a replacement rotor/pump? I would want also to replace the small key that drives it. Although it looks good I am suspicious that if not perfect it could cause another failure. I'm surprised by how small the key is, but I guess it was designed to fail rather than have the pump break (hmmm, what went wrong). Another thing I found broken is the parking pawl toggle spring - the one that looks like a hairpin. This could have allowed the pawl to engage at any time! Finally, the rear needle bearings were destroyed - I found most bearings in the case and half of the cage was missing. I can only imagine that the last time it was rebuilt it was put in that way. Apart from a couple of stripped threads holding the valve block in place, all the workings of the box appear to be in good condition with little wear evident so I would like to rebuild it. Regards, Clive.

Did your Daimler box have a rear pump?

Hi Harvey,
It will have one - but it is in the car. I wanted to be able to swap the boxes out and then rebuild the original.
Clive.

Hi Clive.
I can see what you are aiming to do and it makes sence to keep the car mobile, but you might need to check the lengths of each box as they might vary. The speedo drive outlet might differ along with the rear mounting and I know two types of convertor were used on the Daimler ( large and small input shafts ) the Volvo I think uses the small input as the convertor was the small type. The throttle valve cable might also be too short for yours.

As said above, the Volvo box isn't going to fit straight in in place of the original daimler unit.

Thanks Guys,
I'm glad you have the knowledge and generosity to pass it along.
The Volvo box has a 22 spline input shaft with 10" converter. The Daimler service and parts manual sheds no light on this (although the parts manual only lists one part number for input shaft and converter).
Afraid is is a tad too warm to go looking under the car right now to see about the other differences, but given the input shaft could be different it means the better option is to pull and rebuild the Daimler box using the Volvo box for parts.
Thanks, Clive.

Apologies, I need to RE do this thread after joining a better host site for the pics. Any chance you're still up to it? I'm going to rebuild a box soon and this thread would help a lot!

My sentiments are similar to Warwick's Andy...you certainly put a lot of time and energy into providing a very useful resource for enthusiasts to rebuild their own BW35 if so inclined. It truly is a PITA that all the images went south. If you have the energy to restore the post you'll find Postimages.org a useful, free and easy to use host.

The version I prefer is the direct photo on the page... version 2.
(Postimages.org is very easy to use...that's the beauty of it, you don't have to be a tech head)

Ok, I need to put a few things in place first so it might be a bit slow, it was on the " to do list " and the cold weather is approaching so I will make a start as soon as I upgrade my internet package.

The gauge piece for correct adjustment is 1/4" (...not exactly a shim)

I dismount my gearbox after a big oil leak after 50km; a few hours later, the leak has disappeared and the car is operating normally! the inlet seal and the ring seem to me in good condition. What can be the problem ? Stef

Hello bw35 fans. I'm in the process of rebuilding a bw35 but I can't seem to get proper info to rebuild back up. I came across this site thought I found It, but no pics for the Assembly. Is there any way I can get some pics that seem to be missing? Thanks for your help

Vee Possibly could be a partially clogged filter. You'll need to remove the transmission pan to check.

What can be the problem ? Stef Stef, what do you mean by 'dismount my gearbox'? Do you mean you removed it, looked at the front pump seal and then refitted the gearbox! That's a lot of work to make a quick visual assessment of the front pump seal! Possible/probable areas of leaks from a BW35 are. 1. Front pump seal. It may be damaged or hardened from age. If hardened it may have scored the torque convertor pump drive's sealing surface. Did you check the pump drive nose and tangs on the torque convertor. 2. The small cross shaft seal(s). Hardened from age and heat. 3. The rear flange seal. As above. 4. The trans pan gasket. Old and or over tightened. NB. These transmissions can be built to be virtually leak free...but it's due to attention to detail in the rebuild process.
