Lynne`s car is a P5b Coupe. The problem for which advice is sought is that the front passenger door (N/S) suddenly cannot be opened from outside. The key releases the pull up button but on pressing the door handle button the button seems to be pulled down slightly and nothing else happens, The door can be opened from the inside. The manual when desribing how to remove the door mechanism is not very helpful. Once the door panel is out the manual says "withdraw the mechanism through the apature" I cannot even see how to get a spanner on the retaing bolts let alone how it would come out.l

Take 5 had an excellent article on the correct adjustment of the Zero torque locks and its more likely to be lack of lubrication and/or striker adjustment due to sagging hinges/sills.
The symptoms you describe point to this

The same question was asked on the old board some time ago. I cannot remember what the answer was but it was definitley in the last 8 years.
Try SEARCH " Zero Torque locks" and see what comes up. Otherwise have good old read of your Take 5's.
These locks are great when new but can be a real pain as they begin to wear & seize up or hinges drop unless you know the tricks.

I had this happen to me years ago and it turned out to be a tiny connecting strip of metal had come off inside the door. Remove the door card and have a really careful root around inside the bottom of the door and you might find this little thin flat piece and a retaining washer. If nothing take a careful look at the mechanism with a torch and see if you can see this same little bit that may have come off of the lock mechanism at one end..slamming the door can cause this. How many times do you have to tell passengers.. DON'T SLAM THE DOOR!!

getting the handle off is a real pain you need a universal joint on a socket extension to reach the top nut.
getting it back in is even worse I ended up using a bit of superglue to fix the nut in the socket (got fed up with picking it out of the bottom of the door) and a bit of plasticine on the universal joint to keep it aligned until the nut took.
God knows how they did it at the factory, trained mice maybe?

Come on, its not that difficult. Tiny spanners can be got from the local tool centre I think it is 8mm or 5/16" in old money. The door is slotted for the bolt while the upper fixing is a flat clip. Reassemble by sliding the upper spigot and clip and, leaving a gapbetween the door and handle, engage the bolt and washer and tighten. Wadhams do the plastic pads and perhaps the flat spring washers. They dont like the frosty weather.

hmmn you're lucky, I have 2 bolts on mine one at the top and one at the bottom, I like the idea of the sliding clip sounds much simpler than trying to fiddle with the top one on mine.
I'm guessing I must have a modified set by a previous owner, broken clip and tapped the handle for a stud maybe?. Mines a 74 p5b so possibly different from the factory? all 4 handles are like this.

This i believe is a common problem. One which was recently fixed on my saloon The door panel needs to come off and you can if you have small hands get in with an open ended spanner undo the two bolts holding the handle on. Once undone the mechanism is linked by a strip of metal onto a pin which is held by a spring clip . This clip is easy to lose in the bottom of the door so be careful when flicking it off. When you then take the handle off you see that the lock mechanism has an adjustment nut and bolt which determines how far the lock travels when the button is pressed. In your case the lock barrel may be worn which you will see by exercising the movement a few times or it hopefully may simply be that the adjustment bolt needs to be lenghtened to touch the face of the lock release in the door( aluminium coloured square face you will need a torch to see what i mean. If successful you can re assemble and all will be working. Good Luck Chris

Chris and the rest, I have only just found my way back into this section of the site. We all seemed to agree that it is a fiddly job. I will start with Chris`s suggestion, a torch and adjust the bolt length onto the release plate and take it from there. Thank you all John Stacey (Bristol)
