These official cars were well past it by then and rather tatty. The wipers say it all as does the Dymo tape switch labels
I gather Lady Thatcher did not even like them and no doubt the special West of England cloth uphlostery was well soaked in Harold Wilsons' pipe smoke?

Maggie very much liked the Rover P5, she preferred them to the Jaguar's that came later, mainly because she found the Rover much easier to get into in a ladylike manner. Her driver for many years, another Dennis, also preferred the P5.

:oWell compared to a XJ Jag of the time who can blame her! Perhaps you have inside knowlege?
There is no comparison - perhaps a Merc would have been more suitable? BL still did the Daimler Limo then so I am surprised she put up with the Daimler Double Six LWB?

It's a good clip and is one of the clips on the Quentin Wilson Top Gear appraisal of the p5b from a few years back which I have on video. Unfortunately, I can't view the clip in that much detail as my broadband speed is only 256kps. Rover Rookie must have inside knowledge about the official fleet at that time as the cars looked pretty well kept right up to the end in 1981.My own opinion is that Margaret Thatcher probably liked the Rover because it looked unmistakenly British and would have appealed to her for that reason.Having said that, none of us will ever know will we? The p5b had an offical ministerial life from approx 1967 to 1981 (no p5s were commissioned) so they must have done the job and certainly looked the part and that is the reason they lasted so long. By the way what does the comment Dymo tape switch levels mean?

Richard, I am having serious problems navagating this site and so please forgive me if the link to which you refer is detailed somewhere else. I would like to download the Quentin Wilson clip and preferably the entire 30 minute programme on the P5. Which web address were you attempting to get the clip from? John Stacey (Bristol)

Hello John I haven't downloaded this clip that was Arthuy, I clicked on the link to view it through Real Player. It was the quality of the download I was referring to. I recorded the Top Gear programme on the P5b on video a few years back.It was a fine if predictable tribute and I am very glad I recorded it. Richard

Harold Wilson's P5B with the special rear armrest pipe ashtray has been displayed at Gaydon from time to time and the extra gear console switches put in the for the radio and running lights etc are labelled rather crudely with black Dymo Tape the old fashioned embossed tape that used to be had for labels.
The fawn cloth upholstery is also peppered with spark burns from his worthiness's pipe ;D
This may be the car Lady Thatcher used although they did have several with consequetive reg numbers. It may still be at Gaydon unless they flogged it off like they did many other cars there after all they do have the Queens housed there

Greetings!
How come that when I try to follow the link for the Thatcher arriving clip listed in the original posting I get an error message from the BBC saying this is only available to UK viewers?
Has devolution gone to the BBC's head? I am using AOL as an ISP but as far as I know Falkirk has not yet declared UDI.
