Tom & Dave. I always press the permanant log in system but I find that I often keep having to permanantly log in again. A slight irritation but nothing more.GlennR

I have to say that this is one of the reasons I am reticent about joining. My past experience with owners clubs has been that only a handful of members actually participate with things like this forum, going to regional or area meetings, submitting anything to the club magazine, helping other members, passing on tips etc etc etc. The rest are like a load of cuckoo chicks with their beaks open waiting to be fed. Most of whom bemoan any changes, claiming they were not consulted, or knew anything about it, and are the ones who bleat loudest when their club magazine is two days late !
Sound familiar ?

I know what you mean, having been on many committee's there is always the same old faces, those who contribute and those who do not.Personally It does not bother me as I seem to get more thick skinned as I get older. With 110 members registered as members on this site and only twelve votes registered on the survey it is a slight dissapointment to say the least, so I ask out of courtesy to all those concerned, and the club, for members to take a second to answer the survey. ;)GlennR PS It only seems to accept your vote if you are signed in as a member and not a guest? so therefore a guest cannot vote unless he becomes a member?? (I think I got that right)

Don't forget, lots of people don't use their computer for days at a time and then there will be people who are on hols etc.The amount of people who contribute to clubs like ours Is probably much more than you think.I can think of many people here( north of the border) who have helped me a lot with advice on my car;Trevor,Tom(from Clydebank)Jim,Chaz etc but these aren't people who are glued to the computer 7 days a week!

One question not included in the survey was: How old are you? I think it would be interesting to know some sort of average age for Rover P5 members. Then we could target the club advertising, say in SAGA magazine or HOME AND GARDEN !!!!!!!

???Board members can enter age in the profile but few ever do for some reason or any other detail for that matter.
Anyway in general you have to be of certain age to be able to run these and they are hardly a Cool mode of transport for youthfu people :-Xl

We wouldn't want massive amplifiers, wide 18" diameter wheels with low profile tyres, large bore exhausts and LED's in the screen wash jets would we!! ;D

But they ARE a cool mode of transport for yoofs, its just hard to get insurance when you are as young as wot I am, especially if you have two speed mirrors, power assisted mudflaps and an overhead bonnet. Does this mean that the average owner drives around on Sundays at 20 mph making other motorists angry, wears a trilby hat, clip on big ears with hair coming out of them, and has an uncontrollable bottom lip ?
I hope not ! Smallfry aged 44 1/4

Have we met before? You just went a little too far with your assumption... to correct you need to remove the 'lip' from your description. ;D
I also noticed your very active involvment on this site yet lack of enthusiasm to join the club. Why not try it for a year and see if it lives up to your hopes? Many of the folks on this site would I am sure be happy to welcome you to the club

Well Smallfry, I drove my P5B coupe on Good Friday on my way to work, and saw the tacho into the red line (in 3rd gear). I was not wearing a Trilby (don't even own a hat) but was keeping a look out for the boys in blue! Catch me if you can!! Seems to me that you are becoming "one of the few who participates in things" on web sites and such like, and I think you SHOULD join the club, 'cos the club needs people who get off their ar*e and do something about it! Go on, be devil and join the dark side!

:PI've got a selection of hats and a trilby - not much good in a Coupe but great in the Saloon. I always drive all my cars to their full potential unless the law prevents. Most drivers of modern Euroboxes are surprised that a car of such advanced years can leave them standing - and that only the 1938 Rover 16 (P2).
Yes Smalfry should join the club - I could do with more more support or at least he could become a member of this forum - FOC ;D

Sadly its not the "boys in blue" you need to look out for any more.......its vans parked by the side of the road and on motorway overpasses you need to watch out for, and cars with two rear view mirrors and maybe more than one radio aerial. You know what points make....and it ain't prizes thats for sure ! Of course I would never drive my Rover in such a fashion ! I wish I could drive it in any fashion, but just before christmas 2003 I went to change the water pump, and it all went downhill from there. Now I find one of the sills are filled with aerosol foam and filler so I guess I'd better join, just to get the encouragement of seeing some running cars. I just wish I was made of money like all you chaps.

In my experience the Sunday 20 mph ers, and double wrinklies, all drive Euroboxes, and mostly the ghastly French ones. The only time they wake up to accelerate is when you try and pass them in your Classic car. Last Monday was an example of idiotic driving, a Tranny Minibus was waiting to pull out of a side road in front of me with nothing coming the other way. He sat and waited until I was almost on him, then decided to dawdle out across my path. With a load of passengers on they wouldn't have stood a chance if I had smacked the vehicle right in the middle.
Apart from that I have noticed that other car drivers seem to have to get out in front of you at all costs if you are in your classic. They get nowhere and very often you leave them for dead.

;DI too am pleased you may join but I am not certain where you get the idea "we chaps" are made of money All my fleet costs me less than one modern pre-owned Eurobox would.

That's perfectly true about a comparison with running a modern 'Eurobox'. I have five cars all tax free, and the insurance is about the same as a modern car fully comp. If you take the mileage allowance of 3000 miles per year on each car I can clock up 15K which is more than I would do normally. The insurance on my Humber SuperSnipe fully comp is only £50 per year, just to give an indication. I also have the fun of driving something which is totally individual.

Don't forget the 'poor' members who are 'unfortunate' enough to own very late P5's (Post 1973). We have to pay full road tax!! And yes, I have a Heritage certificate that proves the cars' 'date of birth' (19th April 1973).

Thats a real bummer Adrian. I must admit that one of my little pleasures if going to the Post Office to get my tax. I especially like the bit when they say "do you want six months or the whole year ?" So I can say "um err now let me think......oh go on then, I'll have the full year"
Really the better and fairer way to do it would be that any MODEL that has been out of production for 25 years should be exempt. It seem crazy that some P5 owners should have to pay and some not. Just the same as many early seventies cars that were "on the cusp". I don't really understand why the government are so frightened anyway. There are not really that many old cars in everyday use, and as time goes on I dont think many are keeping old cars in garages for years as they once did, so I can't see its going to be a massive revenue loser for them.
EVERYONE knows that people with old cars must be rich. Thats what my neighbours say anyway ! I knew that comment would provoke some response, but its really meant tongue in cheek, I am well aware that restoring any old car is a "get poor quick" scheme. It could be worse though, you could spend all your hard earned on bolt on stuff for your modern. My bosses son has just got a Ford Focus RS. No prizes for guessing where the money came from ! He is 20 years old, and the insurance is......wait for it........ Four thousand three hundred and seventy pounds !!!!
Glad its not mine !
I have to use a modern ish diesel because of the fuel cost and milage that I do, but I agree what you all say, and its not just the insurance, but when you take into account fuel costs, servicing, interest on loans, depreciation, and road tax etc etc, the cost of a modern car is frightening when you work it all out.
