I've been busy cutting out the rusted metal and adjusting door gaps etc. and the time came for paint, thinking it would be nice to keep things as close to original as possible , cellulose paint was ordered up and duly applied. Disaster struck when preparing the underlying paint it cracked open leaving a visually awful looking mess. No attempt to repair it would work, and with continued paint defects the only solution was to remove it back to bare metal and start again. This time though more modern paints were used and things are now taking shape quite nicely. It turns out somebody had applied a synthetic enamel paint many years ago and had been lurking underneath, this had caused the reaction. Just shows that it's difficult to find out what has gone previously and there is no way of finding out. The only solution it seems is to remove all the paint back to bare metal and start afresh. Lesson learnt by me that keeping things original sometimes just doesn't work!! Thanks for looking

Glad you got it all sorted and looking good. If you ever need to paint again and not sure about the paint and condition on the car try using a sealer first, saves all the hard work of bare metalling www.hex.co.uk/tds/upol/barcoat.pdf

To get the dodgy paint off normal abrasive products clogged up and were useless,I ended up using a MAKITA POLISH MACHINE set at the lowest speed fitted with a wire brush, it was like sticky toffee, and took 3 hours to remove from one door.

Shame the barcoat didn't work its normally spot on. I guess this is the problem when other people have been at the car before and not done it correctly, sounds like you've had a nightmare but all coming together well now so well done. Will the car be at the national?
