Hello Rover Lovers ! Well, after a fine weekend with one day spent under the car and another in it ! (No change there....) i wonder if any you can help me with a couple of minor frustrations ?...... I have "sticky brake" syndrome....for some reason it feels like a front brake is sticking on for a few moments when driving, binds a little then you feel it release, any ideas anyone ? Second one is fuel smell in the cabin when driving, is there anything common to look for ? My thrid P5 now, just cant keep away, i love them, despie their little....."Characteristics".... I'd very much appreciate any guidance or wisdom anyone can spare ! All the best, Marc (P5BVEX) 07403112666 G500WNK@HOTMAIL.CO.UK

Welcome Mark. Sounds like caliper trouble, try bleeding system, if no joy maybee a caliper referb req. As for the petrol smell, take a look at the seal under the petrol cap, often past it. If not check all the fuel supply, and return set

Thats great, Thanks Mark, i was thinking about taking the front callipers off and stripping them down, like so many things on the Coupe, well mine anyway, often just removing, cleaning and putting back again does the trick ! Cheers

Welcome to the forum Mark Follow Andy's good advice you should be able to do the brake sticking checks with the front off the ground, if the car is not pulling to one side due to calliper problems as Andy said, you may have a problem with the release valve at the end of the master cylinder or a sticking servo or a combination of all if the car has been laid up?

Now you mention it, i have noticed when they bind if i put my foot under the brake pedal and pull back it does release the bind some times, when the bind is off she runs perfectly true and doesnt pull either way, in fact she doesny pull either way when they are binding ! Maybe its the master cylinder valve......

Could also be a collapsing hose if its just one side?

Re petrol smell, ask yourself a few questions. In order to fix a problem you generally need to reliably replicate it:
When does it smell, all the time or at certain times? If all the time the chances are you can find a drip or wet patch. Can you make it smell (or make it smell worse if all the time): ie under acceleration? Is the smell stronger in front or back of car? Does it smell more if you pull reserve? I've had leaks under twin carbs which only smelled under acceleration, when I checked I never saw anything as the heat from the engine had evaporated the petrol. Feeling around the carbs and float chambers suddenly produced a leak onto my hand...
Also check for drips under car, especially around reserve tap, look in boot and also look under rear seats! My last leak was from the drain tap under the tank which happens to drain into the car and pool under the rear seat squabs....
Follow the fuel system from carbs back through pump, fuel lines, reserve tap, fuel lines and back to tank. You will find it somewhere!
