Ref: P5B Coupe Has anyone ever experienced the power steering beoming very heavy in hot weather - usually in standing traffic? Mine has always suffered but only on very hot days (so not much of a problem really is it!!!!) When normal driving speeds are possible, problem goes away - how about an oil cooler for the PAS fluid? Modern cars have them don't they?
PS Should add that fluid is fresh and new filter fitted in reservoir. No leaks evident from pump or steering box.New belt fitted and correctly tensioned.
Cheers
Adrian

It can signify a worn pump but it will start to leak before this becomes any real problem. Old oil/blocked filter will not help as would worn/shiny and/or loose belt The oil only really heats up when its doing work moving the steering it justs circulates when wheel is not being moved so no point in a oil cooler

I ocasionally get this but can't recall if on hot days. It feels like a hydraulic lock! At first I used to undo the bolt (peg) on top of the steering box a couple of turns which released the pressure. That freed it but re-setting the peg was a fiddle.Jacking the front up to get the wheels clear of the road then waggling the steeringwheel also cleared it.I felt that the problem was due to getting on to full lock which the handbook warns about.Tight manouvering on car parks seems to bring it on for me. Sometimes I get lucky and it goes away on its own. Regards , John.

Hi John
My steering only seems to become heavy in the summer time when underbonnet temperature is at its hottest. When driving along, even in the height of summer, the steering is fine. So its a temperature related issue but filter is new, fluid is fresh and to correct level, no known blockages and no leaks anywhere. Maybe the steering box is too tight?
