What is the real purpose of the spring loaded plunger device under the throttle pedal on my 1973 V8? Mine does seem to do anything. Is it a device to help push the pedal back or is it a left over from earlier cars and not used on late cars with the later gearbox? Thanks Adrian

I could be wrong, but I think it's a hangup from earlier vehicles - at one stage, I think it was used as a kick-down switch for the automatic transmission

It's definitely the kickdown switch for the gearbox.

A kickdown switch for the gearbox?
Here's me thinking that the kickdown was acuated by cable from the throttle, down the left side of the engine.
Where does the wiring from this kickdown switch go to on the gearbox? My gearbox has only got the wiring to the inhibitor / reverse lamp switch as far as I can tell.

Its just there to provide a resitance so the the driver knows the kickdown position for the auto gear change and on early 3 Ltr manuals the overdrive as well . No electrical connection is necessary
If it does not seems to be doing anything the kickdown gearbox cable is out of adjustment

Thanks for that Phil, I thought you'd have the answer! My kickdown does work and now I understand the plugers function. Def. no wiring to it. Cheers Adrian

Phil is correct. The kickdown is purely mechanical. Always check that the rubber bush is in the bracket at the rear of the air cleaner, as they can disintergrate leaving the rod to which the kickdown cable is attached to be unsupported. Kickdown then does not work. Do not fiddle with the adjustment on the cable as a poorly adjusted box can burn out the brake bands. It is best to adjust the box with the sump off so that you can be certain that the operating valve is closing. The rubber bush is the same as the one that should be fitted in the bracket under the car that the handbrake rod passes through.

Note that only late P5B's with the short kick-down cables have the bush at the end of the head - early ones had a carb mounted bracket for a long cable
