Sometimes I get exhaust fumes in the car - especially on overrun with a window open - any ideas?

A badly fitting or totally perished boot seal will give this condition. Exhaust fumes tend to travel up the boot lid and so through the seal. You can tell this by the amount of dirt that accumulates on the lower half of the lid and also the rear bumper.

Thanks John - I suspected that and tried re-sealing but it might not have sealed very well - I will look again. Thanks Kev - I knew someone would say that! When I worked in rural Wales many years ago I complained to my farmer employer that my Mk11 Landrover leaked petrol when filled over half full - 'Well, don't fill 'im over 'alf full then!' - was his solution. You would get on!

A leaking rear box will give this problem. Put your foot over the tailpipes and listen for leaks.

It may be worth checking for any oil leaks that may be dropping onto the exhaust pipe. Does it smoke straight away or after a while? I liked Kev's advice. ;D

Glenn I think you may have missed the point of the question. (put it down to age maybe). It was exhaust fumes and not burning oil fumes. Oil fumes give off quite an acrid smell so are very distinctive.
If the seal has been re-set and it still does it maybe the bootlid is not making a complete a complete seal all the way round. Try adjusting the lock so it's a slam shut. There are other holes in the boot lid and are enough to let fumes in. It's a process of elimination. Good luck.
Even on modern hatchbacks they advise not to travel far with large objects in the boot area where you have to tie the lid or not as the case may be otherwise it will suck in the exhaust fumes.

I note your point John but sometimes people may get confused what may be exhaust smoke or oil smoke. Anyway, I am going to take my teeth out, rub some linament into my aching bones and watch "Debbie does Dallas" now, where's my glasses?

Wanna borrow a pair so you can find them. If I can't find my glasses I usually have to wear another pair so I can see them.
