The restorers bible is held by the members of the P5 owners Club jointly - most of it has not been written down and has been ciomplied by many years of experince of the variuos individuals/members and the garages where applicable. There is nothing different about these cars except that the are built like house sides and will take a lot of corrosion damage before they fall aprat.
That said when they need sorting you will know about it!

The car wont be going back to Richard Giel, it's mine now warts and all! Once the VOSA inspector has had a look it'll be time to roll up the sleeves and get on with it . Just been told that the dam things sat on the drive with a flat tyre now- will it ever end? It's back to the wifes triumph herald convertible as my everyday car now, doesn't make quite the same sound!!! Wonder if i could swap the engines whilst i do the rovers repairs ;D Expect to get lots more silly questions from yours truly.

I have got a Herald too....and you CAN get the engine in As you were sold the car to you with a dodgy MOT......and the seller being a so called specialist, he can hardly claim ignorance.......I would still be looking to get my money back, or the greater part of it ! Don't matter that it was "sold as seen" in court !

"Sold as Seen" is no excuse for selling with a dodgy MOT! if it was sold in road worthy condition backed up with a new MOT. Like Smallfry I would take him to court or seek legal advice he was obviously fully aware of the condition and should be taken to task! you should get your money back with compensation or if you want to keep the car the cost or repairs to make the car "ROAD WORTHY" the work being carried out by Richard Giel! bodywork is down to you "Sold as Seen" good luck which ever way you go.

Sold as Seen is as it say's but they don't have a leg to stand on with a dodgy M.O.T. If you drove the car down the road and the axle whined or a headgasket went then it was sold as seen, but the M.O.T is a legal document in relation to the safety of the vehicle for it's purpose.

I would agree with everyone, first phone Richard Giel and and politely point out the problems, the independent report, the dodgey MOT and your contact with the authorities and that you want your money returned - keep it polite but firm.
If he does decide to argue, then again point out the legal situation he will find himself in, (plus court costs, costs of independent reports, your costs etc) and I am sure he will see the error of his ways.
Independent 'specialists' survive by reputation, so I am sure an agreement can be made.

Have spoken to Richard Giel this morning, and have come to an amicable decision regarding the car.

The above is a very interesting and educational incident that fortunately ended with the new owner getting recompense. I have employed Richard Giel in the past to help me get the engine in my P5B coupe going again, but after reading about this incident, I would never consider doing that again. ( He was unable to get the engine to run properly anyway ). I wonder if any other members of the club feel the same way ? It seems Mr Giel has killed off his own reputation ( or started one ?) when he sold that "Vanden Plas" P5B. I visited his workshop and was shown this car, but I was very dubious as to whether it really was a Vdp, I had never heard of one before. Mr Giel told me he used to work full time for the Metropolitan Police, servicing their cars, so he has absolutely no excuse for selling a car in such a poor condition. He most definitely would have been fully aware of just how bad it was, as he told me he had owned it for many years.
