Rather than start another thread I thought I'd add my query to the end of this one as one of the first posts is relevant. The reverse lights have never worked on my rover and it would never start in park, only neutral. Over the past few days I have replaced the soundproofing and the fibre panels on the centre console. While I was at it I had a look at the inhibitor/reverse light switch and saw one wire hanging off. I refitted it (from inside the car, with some difficulty). A couple of days later with everything back together I thought I'd try the car out,the reverse lights worked (I was hoping they would, although normally for me nothing is that simple!). To my surprise the starter also now works in park as well as neutral but not in gear so the switch is presumably fine. My query is that should replacing a reverse light wire make any difference? Early in this thread someone suggests if the wires are removed from the switch the starter will operate in any position,I'd assumed the switch is in effect two seperate and not interconnected switches, both normally open contacts is this incorrect? Either way,I'm quite chuffed...Result!.

Two entirely separate switches Kev you probably fitted the reverse wire and disturbed the inhibitor one so it now makes! they do get a bit cruddy under there Well Done
