For several years I had pestered my bodyman to do a bit of welding on the sills. Then his arm was twisted by the MOT failure. So up went the car on the single post lift, and out came the hammer to knock away at the rot. The holes got larger, and larger, and the following photographs graphically illustrate the warnings, often given on this board, of hidden horrors beneath seemingly sound cars.

So typical too - at least it was isolated so the entire sill assembly did not need replacing

Good old salt on the roads we dont know how lucky we are in that respect. If you leave it like that the fuel economy will be great.

Yes! And she has a good layer of salt again in this sub-zero weather,

Near side front wing.
The original wing had had a JRW repair panel which had bubbled along the join. I was in mind to repair again but in the end plumped for replacing with a secondhand replacement wing from the BL era. This was stripped to bare metal and then etched primed. Looked quite good in primer! Initially I tried paint stripper which was hard work and took a lot of stripper. But it still needed a lot of mechanical removal as well, particularly getting rid of spots of surface rust. So from then on all stripping was done mechanically with a silicone grit wheel.

Much has been written recently about difficulty in fitting wings. This wing took a day and a half's work to fit. The following photos give an idea of the problems, but that's the BL era quality for you.

Having fitted the wing it was satisfactory apart from the bonnet/wing gap. This was bodged with filler.

Neat - strange how apparently straight forward jobs turn into much larger ones

Only to be expected Phil. I thought I'd overestimated at three weeks for the work; actually turned out at 14 months.

So you think you are safe? I did until I took a pry bar to the rear seat belt mounting. I had drilled another hole to attach the seat belt some years ago, as I couldn't get the keeper out of the original mounting. Do you think it is electrolytic reaction?

Doubt it but the end result is the same! How long has it lasted though and are losing sight that modern cars are scrap after 10 years?

I was surprised at the condition of the bottom of the battery box, but on reflection perhaps I shouldn't be. The battery hadn't been out for 15 years, no need really.
