Come on now. It was not that bad. I could not see any rot. It is better than councils sending their unwanted cars straight to the crushers like they usually do. I have seen some lovely cars that went that way because if they were reclaimed the owner would have to pay the back tax or parking fines. I hope this encourages other bodies to do the same. The buyer may well seek and find this site for help and encouragement not the opposite. I wish I had that money to spend on a decent example and not been tempted to get mine for £100 and end up spending £xxxx.xx (censored)

In 1999 I had a phone call on what I presume was this car, owned by an elderly lady fromn new and parked in a car park near Baker St. A friend of the owner wan't to know what it was worth, I offered to go and look at it for them but never heard back, it appears the owner died just after that.
It does seem rather a lot of money for a car needing recommissioning, I thought they might struggle to get an opening bid. Hopefully they new owner will soon be able to sort out the problems and enjoy what looks like a potentially nice car.

It saddens me to see these sort of comments made about our cars. This can only lead to even more decline in their values, making it even less worthwhile spending any money on them.
What you SHOULD be thinking is, great ! if that car is worth that sort of money, what must mine be worth ?
If us supposed enthusiasts cannot muster anything positive to say, its little wonder the cars are so underated and undervalued by the public at large.
In fact, this is exactly the reason why the whole Rover company has gone to the wall.

Did you see the car?? this was pure e bay/local london t.v hype by people who do not know the cars and think there worth a fortune in any condition because they are old.

I paid £400 for the duchess and maybe that is too much? If the punter who bought the Westminster car paid over £4000 for it, good luck to them. They hopefully have enough money to do it up or sell the number plate to an EXCecutive of a company? If they are reading this, I wish you all the best. ;)GlennR

I went on ebay to try and find this car but must have looked in the wrong place or it has been removed.I did notice quite a few P4/P5's but most looked pretty tired. What I didn't realise was the horrible colour that Mulberry trim turns into with age as shown in a Coupe for sale. I have always believed in talking our cars up and I think we are guilty of taking too much pride in undervaluation. I think we also forget that a lot of people in this Country are awash with cash and would consider the sorts of money we talk about to be the cost of a modest holiday. Richard

I have added the link to the £4k P5 from ebay. Looking at the feedback ratings of the bidders it looks like it was a load of hoaxers bidding in the end. EXC in the registration, is this not a Rover Solihull registration number. A few of the company and test cars were registered EXC and things with X in the number plate. Perhaps there is more to the desirability of the car than some first thought. Just a thought. Colin £4k p5b cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=29759&item=4542769793&rd=1

Colin Registration EXC is correct for London C.C up to 1963. With it being a one owner car and registered in 1962, it would have been covered by London C.C.
From 1964 to 1974 all XC's were allocated to Solihull. After 1974 the registration was then withdrawn.
Hope this clears the matter up.

The radiator grille centre piece and badge seem to be from a P5B.

Grille centre spine/badge apart it does seem very original down to period wing mirrors and spot lights though these are certianly not the approved Rover accessories. Shame that a badge bar was not used also.
It has the now quaint Lucas standard Tripode headlamps which look good but not much use in the dark.
It is a quite rare model as most of these Mk1a's went to banger races very early on and were perhaps the least desirable - there are not many left in this sort of condition so one day the owner may be laughing if he or she keeps it original with its number plate.
I do hope it appears at rallies despite some of the comments appearing on here!

I do believe that this is the car that was talked about on LBC radio. It belonged to a Countess who bought it new in 1961 or 2 and drove it around herself. It was parked in a Westminster council car park for many years after the Countess became ill and subsequently died back in the early to mid 90s. Of course, the council levied the fees for all this time, and so ran up a massive bill. I am not sure how they came to own it, because I would have thought that after that long a period, they would have had it taken away and crushed. Maybe the old lady is not dead, or maybe the executors had something to do with it. I am sure this is the same car !
