Crikey that looks tight! Did you decide to run without exhaust manifolds ?
Lol
Interesting project!

Hi All, Yes, I've been lurking for a while and have had a P5B in storage for a few years but now have the means to get the project completed The shell has mostly been restored (still needs final fettling and paint) so now it is sound the mods are being undertaken. The engine is an all steel stroked Chevy LQ4 which comes out at around 6.6L/402ci, not entirely sure on HP/Torque but should be heading towards 500 for both. The narrower V on this type of engine (from a Silverado Pick-up) makes the fit between the inner wings possible, I'm not sure the wider V of an LSn would have worked, even though it has a narrower V a shallow sump and low inlet manifold has been used so it still fits height wise. It's fuel injected with ported & polished L92 heads, MSD coil packs, fully mapable Omex ECU and a compact ancillaries bracket kit (to package it as tightly as possible). Exhaust manifolds were fitted when the picture was taken although they may be swapped to make the primary exhaust pipe easier to fit. Steering link is tight to the o/s wing but fits and will attach to a relocated rack & pinion system. Coil over front suspension will replace the torsion bars so I can select springs and shocks to suit the weight of the new engine. Gearbox is a strengthened TH400 with Gear Vendors overdrive system (0.78). Axle is a Ford 9" with LSD, disc brakes and a Watts Linkage. Shell is being heavily strengthened and braced. Rest of the car will be restored to standard original spec. with just a slightly updated paint scheme but essentially still Silver over Blue. It's coming along at quite a pace now I'll try and get some better photos. Cheers, SF

cool sounding project, I too have undertaken similar modifications on my p5b. I.e ford 9inch with truetrac lsd mounted with a tri four bar set up, rack and pinion steering, new front suspension disks and coilovers all round...I havent quite got round to my engine swap yet, need to do some saving first. Good luck with your project, hopefully see it on the road soon...Gonna be a beast !

Unless you have adjustable suspension you wont get over the speed bumps where i live.

Whatever floats your boat but it won't be anything like a P5 when you've finished. Good luck anyway. And that's why I posted in the "Modified" section. It will look exactly like a P5B, just won't go like one

Sounds good, if your going to put a Chevy in we found that the rack needs to be pushed as far forward as possible, using a P5 subframe instead of the P5B also helped. I'll stick up some more pics as I get them

In all honesty I would personally redesign and build a new subframe, the rover Item is very weak.

This sounds very interesting and am looking forward in reading all your posts. It's a good thing that someone has the time and enthusiasm to go forward with a few modifications. Please take no notice of the negative posts associated with your project, there are a lot of people out there very interested in what you are doing, I'm specifically interested in your steering mods amongst others. Cant wait

I'm sure with the original rover set up the subframe is fine but, when your adding the extra stress and strain of a modern car set up on the old rover subframe believe me they are not fit for purpose. I've cracked mine and have had to seriously brace it in order to use it.

I am a traditionalist as far as the P5/P5b is concerned and don't agree with a lot of stuff posted in this section "BUT" this is why I suggested we have this section to prevent conflict between the two camps Sometimes the "odd member" tries to provoke by posting their mods in the wrong section on purpose this is just as bad a negative comments in this section by traditionalists. It reminds me of a Joke about a watchmaker he says "If you want to buy a watch! buy a watch! if you don't want to buy a watch don't look in my window" in other words if you don't like modified "don't read the posts" it is difficult if you do "Recent Posts"! but this is the modified section!!!!

Will never modify my P5 in such a way but i like watching other people mods and the way fitting problems are solved. I did a V8 conversion on an mgb which is much easier then this and enjoyed doing the conversion very much. Every solution to a problem gives satisfaction and you have a one of a kind car which is build how you want it. Keep Posts coming please!

Great to see some one new to the board do something interesting to a P5 and certainly put their money where their mouth is. Looking forward to your progress and some innovative engineering solutions. Go for it. Personally I like the mix of new and old and the 'sleeper' appearance of the car.
PS. Bismire if you're reading this, I'd like some tech details on the rack & pinion setup...especially in relation to both bump steer and Ackerman principle. Keep posting and don't concern yourself too much with the philistines!

If I don't have anything decent to say than I don't tend to say anything. Each and everone to their own but out of courtesy and respect I keep my head down as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I had a good mate of 40 years who unfairly criticised my wife once after we helped him out with lodgings, food etc. I don't speak to him anymore.

Hi bud, I went over for a head to head meeting with the restorer (his suggestion) who has promised me the car will be done towards the end of this year. It is taking far too long TBH but his standard of work is exceptional. He restored Dave Green's Daimler V8 and did a great job. I feel I am stuck between a rock and a hard place but hope for some more positive news in the future.
