Hi All,
After having making several stupid wiring mistakes and having blown several fuses - I thought I'd provide the forum with some guidance on fitting an exchange Lucas 6W Wiper Motor (From Wadhams) to a Rover P5B Coupe (1971)
Firstly though, I'd like to thank John (JohnW5PBCoupe) for his help and guidance
When you get you exchange motor - DON'T DO THIS - Look at the wiring coming from the wiper motor and connect the most similar colour wires to those on the loom - You'll blow a fuse or worse.... I blew many fuses experimenting with the wiring
The exchange wiper motor unit from Wadhams had the following 5 wires (note - no wiring assignment information came with the unit - I mailed Wadhams and received the following info)
Green – ignition
Red – park
Brown – slow speed
White – coil
Blue – ignition
This doesn't really help and you need to open the motor casing by removing the two screws on the motor top plate and to check the wiring assignments inside the unit
Here's what I found on my unit :
Brown - to coil
Green - to coil
Blue and white together on one motor armature/brush
Red to the other motor brush, with an additional red wire which goes to the park switch
You'll also notice a threaded hole on the motor top plate - with "E" for Earth (I completely over looked this at first)
To get my motor working properly, I connected the Wadhams replacement wiper motor up as follows :
Wiring Connections
Motor ------------------------------Loom
Green-------------------------------White/Green
Red---------------------------------Red/Green
Blue-------------------------------- Blue/Green
White-------------------------------Blue/Green
Brown------------------------------ Brown/Green
Last but not least ..... The black wiring loom Earth connection
I made up an earth lead, connected it to the body of the motor (there's a threaded hole on the motor cover plate marked "E" - Connected the earth lead to the black wires on the loom
For me, using these loom to motor connections everything works !
If this doesn't work, you might want to check the wiring on the wiper switches on the dash (in case they have been removed and incorrectly re-connected) or check for wiring continuity
Thanks again to John and to all those who have posted to this forum - lots of invaluable information
