A simple question, and no doubt a simple answer... If I unscrew all the screws securing a hinge to the A post (or B/C post), what happens to the tapped metal plate inside the post? Does it disappear to the bottom of the post or is it retained in position in some way? Thanks, Keith.

;DIt should be retained by a metal cage like affair - but if your A post has rusted the cage like affair goes with it. If your A post has corroded simply trying to remove the screws, as you will need at least an impact driver will soon give the game away

Phil is right, the plate is retained in a bracket and should move around in a limited 360 degree movement to allow adjustment. When I did my 'A' post repair in the off side the lower retaining bracket had corroded and the plate would fall into the sill.

Thanks gents for your responses. As the screws moved freely, I took the plunge and removed them. The back plates remained in place... what a relief! Thanks again. Keith.
