Thanks guys. Spent time this week cutting and shaping the chassis reinforcing plates ready to mount the air bag brackets. Also spent time preparing the off side chassis rail which involved removing and grinding back the original shock turrett where it was attatched to the chassis, this then makes room for the brackets with no obstructions. This is one of the plates cut and shaped, still a bit to do on this to shape the ends but its almost done.

These two pics show the upper and lower brackets in place with the bag all bolted together. Just need to complete the other side so i can re check my measurements ready for installation. Woz

Machined up these eight chassis spacers which will be welded into the chassis ready to accept the upper bag mount.

This is the chassis spacers welded in place. This pic shows the top mount bolted in place. This bracket was originally going to be welded in but i have decided to change plans a little and bolt this in to aid maintenance and to make it easier to gain access to the air connections and top bolts. Woz.

Following with interest as engineering is always interesting to me.
I am wondering how this all affects the legal side of things ? What about insurance etc. How do you explain what you do to them. Are there any problems with them ?
Most Insurance companies seem to want to know even about stuff like change of shock absorbers etc. How do your mods fare with them?
Cheers Colin

As far as the legallities are concerned then the way the rules stand at the moment it will fall well within the 8 point rule which will mean that it will not need any further testing (biva) and therefore will keep its original identity and original registration. Thanks for your interest Woz

Wozza not knocking your project its progressing well Just concerned about the 8 point rule and keeping your plate! Part Points Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5 Suspension (front and back) - original 2 Axles (both) - original 2 Transmission - original 2 Steering assembly - original 2 Engine - original 1

People build hotrods, custom cars and all sorts of modified and innovative machinery if they have the skills and the fortitude to see these projects through to completion. There are certified engineers available to assess this type of work and provide reports. Hey gents, how about just watching the build progress as it's in the 'modified'section and not dissuading Wozza from posting updates through deflection! A debate over the insurance issue can be created elsewhere on the forum surely, if there's a strong desire for it and if it doesn't currently exist. Personally, I'd like to see Woz's skills take the work through to completion. NB. Posting anything in the modified section here takes courage, hence the limited number of people doing so, and posting elsewhere!

I enjoy a challenge myself The question asked about insurance was in good faith IMHO others may like to know for their own reasons not to deter Wozza Keep posting Wozza it's your section! good shed engineering

I looked up the 8 point rule and learned something there. I can tell my son his shocks are ok. You are doing a very interesting mod and will no doubt be a great improvement on the original. Looking forward to seeing it how it sits when done. Like the airbag suspension. You doing all this very skilled work is driving me to try and find out why my suspension squeaks ? Cheers Colin

The final setup photo taken from in front of the axle. Just needs the axle dropped and a couple of welds to finish a couple of brackets. I have the air management system being delivered tomorrow so i should have the system working by the weekend with a bit of luck, then i can get the car on the ground and take a few pics outside in the sunlight. Woz.

Made up the final piece of the rear jigsaw which is the crossmember/strut brace which will locate the upper shock mounts Here it is bolted into place it works really well as a strut brace and stiffens the structure up immensely well

Great work Wozza, not only the suspension changes but also the care you take in the engineering of your car.
Perhaps I've missed something but how are you going to deal with the front suspension? At full drop the car will sit on the bump stops...and even then it's not that low. (The query is in relation to maintaining viable suspension movement for a low and comfortable ride)
