I have used the Connolly hide food, which is a thick cream, and the Gliptone conditioner, a thinner liquid. Of the two, I would recommend the Gliptone, as it is easier to use and seems to penetrate into the leather quicker. The Connolly stuff takes days to sink in, the Gliptone only hours.

Does the leather feed soften up the leather ? Does it give it a better chance for the dye to take? And easier to apply?

I'm surprised about feeding the leather BEFORE using the feed to soften it. Surely the order should be, 1. Clean the leather. (this does help to soften it) 2. Colourwash the leather. 3. Feed the leather.

Some makes do advise softening up the leather so that it will soak up more colour

I have used a set from Woolies with excellent results and they recommend to clean and FEED it first before putting on the dye. In my experience it works well.

I saved these recommendations from the old web site Can anyone recommend the best way to feed, clean and re-stain/paint seats. I have the buckskin colour ones. Regards, Simon Author: willDate: 9/18/2003 12:30 am EDT various products, i've tried Woolies (too plasticy), connolly (too shiny) and Leatherique, definitely the best, with work it will soften cardboard leather back to original softness, the dye is water based so allows the leather to breathe and can be mixed as a gloss, matt or satin, plus you can vary the level of sheen by how you apply it try a sample of their restorer www.leatherique.com/good luck Will Author: Alan- LeicestershireDate: 9/18/2003 1:18 pm EDT I have also had good results with softening the leather with the Leatherique products. Never tried their colouring though. Woolies colourings work best if sryaed on in thin coats so the grain of the leather is not clogged up Author: John......WeymouthDate: 9/18/2003 3:27 pm EDT I have not tried Leatherique, but have used Gliptone. I found that their Scuffmaster colour for Buckskin was perfect for my car, I did'nt have to alter the colour at all. Their conditioner is good too and you end up with a lovely smell of leather in the car. If you go to Gliptones site on the web they go through the whole process of leather renovation, they are based in Todmorden. www.liquidleather.com Regards John Author: dave leeDate: 9/18/2003 3:52 pm EDT Hello Simon, I did my buckskin seats several years ago with a kit from trim suppliers "Wollies" from Peterborough way. just send a small square of leather to them & they will send the kit to match. The secret is to apply several coats of the refurbish colour (say around 5) to achieve a uniform appearence I did apply the last coat by brush if I remember & if done properly does look really nice. Then apply the sealer. If you live near Southampton I can do a seat for you & then you can do the rest. Sorry but I do not have Wollies Tel No to hand but they are in the classic car mags. David.

Well i cleaned seats twice Fed them twice with Gliptone feed The instructions on the bottle of dye is to dilute it 10 to 15% Have put some on a seat with a cloth, but its a bit streaky, mind you its only a thin first coat. Do you rub it in or dab it as the bottle says? Does it cover better on second coat or should i use a brush How do you put yours on? Plus it seems to come up a matt finish is this correct?

Yes it does come up matt finish, but once it's dried out using the feed will eventually put a sheen back on. The idea is to dab it on, or gently rub it over the surfaces using the sponge they provide. Two coats should be sufficient though. For large cracks I use a cottonbud dipped in a neat solution. The main thing is not to fill the cracks only colour them.
