Hi All, Just a quick warning that the following P5 currently offered on Ebay is a scam. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROVER-3-5-LITRE-P5B-COUPE-1500-V8-RED-SILVER-BIRCH-/320867049739?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4ab52aa10bI realised that I'd seen this car offered for sale last year and after contacting the seller who is allegedly in Scotland and the car not viewable as its based in Cornwall smelt a rat. Basically its a money scam where you pay for the car up front, then he gets it 'delivered'. It never arrives, you lodge a complaint/dispute with ebay but matey is long gone with your cash. Just google caty@liveuks.com the email address he/she is using for communication and you will see that he has already been flagged up on the VW Camper forum. Sorry to have had to post this, but dont want someone being conned. Cheers Lee.

Thanks for the warning but why is it still on e bay?. Have you contacted e-bay to inform them or even trading standards? I had a couple of Scammers who suceeded in scamming my elderly in-laws for a roofing job. I was livid. I rang him and told him what I thought and what I was going to do. Trading standards thus far have been excellent and he will appear in court next week.

We have a committee member only 5 miles from where this car is located (Cornwall) and he can confirm this does appear to be a scam.
The seller says and I quote 'Hello. I am unable with phone so please use email as primary contact option. I dont use phone for internet deals. '
I leave you to draw your own conclusions. Must say I am surprised it is still on Ebay.

Glenn - I did log back into my ebay account and was going to report it, I then remembered that I had given this scammer my email address, full name and contact numbers so thought better of it in case of repercussions.

About 3 years ago I was looking for a new lathe found one on Claigslist but the picture looked familiar as I had seen it at a dealers the same picture! This lathe was supposedly on the Shetland Isles at a garage. I Googled the garage and rang them as there was only one and of course "what lathe". So I had a good time playing with this guy he did a discount if I paid Western Union

I totally understand. I have heard that it has now been reported to e bay. If there is not a problem he has nothing to be worried about.

According to the DVLA database DPO3L is a currently licensed 3.5 Litre Rover, wonder if the owner of the car knows it's being used in this way?

The P5b has now gone from the listings. I spoke to local police and they put me onto these people: www.actionfraud.org.uk/ - here you can report any intelligence or if you were a victim of fraud on-line. If many people do a report on this person, then this will lead to some action and/or certainly make the person aware that it can't be tolerated ..........

Well done Steve for taking the bull by the horns. This just goes to show how helpful and useful forums can be.

It seems the Rover listing has been yanked at least but yer man's only ever a few mouse clicks from a new identity. The only deterrent will be a size ten police boot through his door at 5am.
As for the Bay; I've found their reporting system arbitrary at best and deliberately biased in favour of illicit trading. Last year I so very nearly lost a wedge on a fake bake Breitling Emergency and a hooky Franck Muller watches. I won the auction but it was only when I imported his cruddy phone pics into an image editor prior despatch of payment and zoomed in that the alarm bells rang. I called him out and gave him the benefit of the doubt but noted in my reply that I would be watching his future listings like a hawk.
Blow me three weeks later his crappy little fakes were up again. This time I spent 3 WEEKS SOLID trying to get these junkers removed and the seller banned. Not a single reply or even an acknowledgement was received. All of a sudden I couldn't file any more report forms! All the while the bids were racking up! I tried posting on the Ebay user's forum but no dice, I even emailed the administrators and mods but again not so much as an acknowledgement. In the end I tried contacting the current bidders to warn them but of course Ebay won't allow that. It used to be possible but they withdrew the facility years ago. A reasonable person might be forgiven for concluding that Ebay are concerned only with the collection of their auction fees regardless of whether they are derived from illicit and illegal trade. They might also get the impression that their administration system actively facilitates that trade. And they'd be right.
My God there's got to be a 2 hour documentary in the subject at least for a diligent investigative documentary program maker.

Well I got no repy from e-bay or acknowledgement from e-bay so I have e-mailed BBC'S Watchdog to see if they have had similar concerns raised.

Reporting scams or illegal items to ebay will eventually result in their removal although it often takes some days. Reporting an item that results in them losing out on their fees usually results in almost immediate removal.

- yes, eblay are only in it for themselves but they have to have credibility in the market place, so have to do something or else they get a bad name on places like this. I say work the system at every opportunity and highlight the scammers when ever and where ever ..... abuser jwhi8016 and piano1491 - caty - caty@liveuks.com - will not survive even with a new name - And do report it to www.actionfraud.org.uk/ every time it happens - the net will close in on this person. Worth noting that Car and Classic now have a Fraud Advice tab on their website - with top10 tips on how to beat the Fraudster - good stuff, eh? - they at least are taking it seriously. - say - how about a sticky on here too, guys?

All good points steve I also made a complaint to Ebay it's not like it used to be it's got too big and makes loads of cash with PayPal plus other irons they have in the fire I see no point in making it sticky as it is an ever changing situation here today gone tomorrow, most guys on here would not buy without seeing and checking the cars details or asking another member in that particular area to view for them I would willingly help anyone in that situation

I own a Rover 75 V8 and a seller tried this a couple of months ago with a MG ZT 260 again the car was meant to be in Scotland but of course the photos we (owners club) had seen before.
I played along for awhile to see how far they would push but then got the add pulled by ebay
