Hello, the stainless steel piece was incorrectly clamped on from the beginning of my ownership. So it worked loose on bad roads. If you like I can take detailed pictures of the clamping mechanism tonight as I am refitting it.
BTW is the rivet under the weather strip in the top right of 2nd picture original? Possibly the doorskin was exchanged...

Hello Warwick, luckily it was only temporarily lost. As seen on photograph: Upon reinstall after taking the pictures I realized that you have to remove the 5 clamps from the trim at either end. They slide inside the channel. Then you put them on the upper door skin evenly distributed . After that the trim can be slid on from above very easily. Thats because you hit the double ended side of each clamp in a very flat angel. Contrary to the lower trim line on doors and wings its much easier I think. The clamps upper part has a 2 counter hooks (not to be seen in picture) that should clamp very fast on the door skin. So when you like to remove a properly installed trim (mine wasn't) you should lever the lower end of the trim line outward while also pushing it up the door. A very flat plastic wedge working from one end to the other should do best. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320381051759&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F320381051759%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm38%26_nkw%3D320381051759%26_naf%3D1%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1Mark

Thanks again Mark.
Looks reasonably easy. It's always much easier when you know how things work and what the hidden bits look like. Exploded diagrams in workshop manuals are very handy but you can't beat a good photo.

This last weekend, I started on the front door seals. The Scotts seals fit well, I thought, though the window seals for the front doors were hard to slide into the holders. It did take me a little bit to figure out how to remount the front stainless steel strips (the rubber for the small triangle window got in the way!). Removing the old door seals made a mess of the garage floor, they turned to dust as I pulled them off!

I think my problem is going to be removing the glue residue.
