Hi Mike, I've added you to the list on Page 1. Which copy of Road & Track is the article in? Actually, I just went and dug out my copt, and it was Motor Trend Classic, Fall 2012 edition I saw it. I dug up the article online if anyone is interested, not sure how available that rag is on the right side of the pond www.motortrend.com/classic/features/12q3_1970_rover_coupe_classic_drive/And yes, think I hit the wrong year in there Should be 1980. I'm no spring chicken anymore, but not quite -that- experieneced ;D

Thanks Mike. What a great article. I must track down a hard copy. I thought it looked like Dirk's in the first photo.
Make sure you introduce yourself to him, Mike. He's a very helpful and approachable guy.

Hello all, i'm a newbie from Victoria Australia and proud new owner of a 1962 Rover P5 Mk 1A, original drive train 127,000 miles, original Pine Green paint (well mostly), and once owned by a prominent Victorian. Regards Bruno

Hi Warwick. The rover was purchased new in 1962 and was first Registered October 1 1962 by Sir James Ralph Darling (google his name). He owned the car up until 1991, he passed away 1995 i think aged 96. There have been a further 2 owners or maybe 3, i have a large folder with all history including every registration paper from new, insurance papers, receipts, original number plates etc.. the car was well cared for and everyone who owned it has contributed to keeping it in good condition. Regards Bruno

That would be Brian in Old Sale Rd. He joined the forum in early 2011 and we exchanged a few e-mails and a phone call about 2 years ago. He's only several kilometres from here. We had planned to catch up and check out each other's cars but at the time I was about to leave for Sydney for a week and the following several weekends were taken with family commitments. Unfortunately, not long afterwards my elderly father had a bad fall and ended up in and out of hospital for a month or so. And then my son and I needed to spend weekends modifying his bathroom and other parts of the house to make things easier for him to manage. During all this I completely forgot about Brian and my P5 progress ground to a halt once more. That's more or less what the past 2 years has been like. In fact, I couldn't even remember his name and had to go searching back through e-mails for 2011.
I knew Darling was a famous headmaster of Geelong Grammar, but I didn't know anything else about him. Interesting history for your new car. Brian didn't mention it, but then we only spoke briefly as we expected to meet.
Sir Arthur Rylah was Deputy Premier of Victoria during the Bolte years. Apparently he had several Rover models during his lifetime.

Hi Warwick. Yes i purchased it from Brian. I hope your father has recovered, my mother had a similar incident and we had to make life easier for her as well at my parent place, getting old is the pits. The rover has all the manuals, all the tools too. Interior was fully retrimmed in 1995 (not the carpets though) and looks great, the only old rubbers on the windows is the back windscreen rubber and drivers quarter window, all the rest have been changed. The motor runs sweet but the wheels all stay locked once brake is applied (but then release after a few minutes), i have been told its the booster as the master cylinder was replaced, i have another rebuilt booster to fit, if that fails in the near future i will be fitting a VH40. I am a member of the Pakenham Auto Club so i will be putting the rover on club reg soon. Come summer time i will be giving the old girl a respray in the same colour. A trailer load of spares came with it which is a bonus including a complete Mk1 engine and box, Brian was kind to follow me back home with all the spares. I look forward to working on it, i have only worked on old holden's before and they appear primitive compared to the rover, a well engineered car! The only electrical item that was not working was the clock, but i have repaired that now so everything works, even the heater and HMV radio work! My father still repairs clocks and watches (aged 85) so i have learnt a lot about how to repair clocks from him, so it was easy. Brian threw a spare clock in so i serviced that too for a spare. Sir James Darling was also Chairman of the ABC in Melbourne for a few years in the 60's and as you mentioned principal of Geelong Grammar for 30 years. I will do my best to look after it and continue the care it deserves! Regards Bruno

Bruno, Brian was about to rebuild the servo when we last communicated, if I recall correctly. But from what I've heard, the VH40 can be used as a direct swap, from a braking performance point of view. If you are ever chasing parts talk to Scott Richmond at Scott's Old Auto Rubber in Oakleigh (you're probably aware of him for bits for other makes), and his brother Mark wrecks the odd P5 in Moorabbin (I can find his number for you), and if you can't find it locally there's David Green ( roverp5.proboards.com/user/102 ) and JRW in the UK. Alas Dad has declined progressively during the past 2 years and is now in assisted accommodation. His memory, leg strength and balance are all failing. But as he says, he's 99 so he can't complain. Your Dad should keep working on clocks as long as he can. It's those sorts of activities that keeps the brain alert.

Hi Warwick. I was actually going to give scott a call soon. I purchased a so called fully remanufactured Girling Mk2 brake booster on ebay recently, the only thing that was done to it was fresh paint. The booster was missing many gaskets and seals, even holes covered by paint! I will be sending it back..well when Paypal fix things up. Your father has done well to reach 99, my father is still very alert, he's always tinkering and fixing things, not just clocks and watches and incredibly still has steady hands and goes for walks along the beach at Inverloch, i must take after him as i always like to keep busy repairing things. I'm sure scott will help me out, or his brother Mark, i have several receipts from 'Roverco' in my folder from previous owners of my rover, he may even know the car. I've noticed a few grooves in the discs so i know a local mechanic that re-machines them for next to nothing, i just can't work on it much at the moment as i have been waiting 3 weeks for a electrician to come and put power to my 2 sheds (that way i can stay out all night and work on the rover). I might actually purchase a VH40, i might just need to make up a new bracket, not sure just yet i have not looked into it. It's been good chatting with you again. Regards Bruno

Hi, I'm a newby from the middle of Germany. I purchased a 3l MKIII Last October. The bodywork is in very good state, I only had to refurbish a few technical problems like brakes, ring gear, oil pump, carburettor and overdrive. It's registered since the end of April. We are spending our holidays at the Baltic Sea at the moment. The Rover is towing our small Eriba caravan. It's the first longer test drive and everything works fine (knock on wood). The vehicle was first registered in Switzerland in 1965 and was sold to the second owner in 1985. the second owner made a rebuilt in 1989. In 1997 he gave the Rover to the National Trust in Gaydon as a present for the museum. In 2003 the Rover was purchased from a british customer, possibly a soldier in the Netherlands. I've workshop invoices from England and the Netherlands. 2007 the Rover was purchased from a dutch customer who spent too much money in a workshop. There are invoices about more than 14000€ until 2012. I hope we'll have a lot of fun with it in the future.
Regards Udo

Bruno,
Dad was like that until about 3 or 4 years ago. He was doing wood-turning until then.
If you're in the Pakenham area and need brake relining work done, I can recommend the Victoria Brake Company. They seem to do mostly truck brakes but what impressed me when I walked in and plonked my rear drums and shoes on the counter was that they recognised them as old Rover brakes.

Hi Warwick. Thanks for the info on the brakes i will keep them in mind (i was actually in Pakenham today). I removed my brake booster and i find it needs a kit which i have ordered from the UK, there was heaps of fluid inside the booster, the sponge rubber seal inside the leather was rotted, i think its the control valve seal? that causes this problem. The booster looks as though it was pieced together from parts of others (i have two others in pieces). The outer front discs look good but the inner have grooves, the pads look new. I have not started on the rear drums yet. All other components under the car look good, no cracked rubber boots or anything loose and the rover has a new exhaust pipe and mufflers fitted that Brian had done before i purchased it, including new tyres, front windscreen seal and so on. The purchase price of $1500 with a trailer load of spares was a good buy (well i think so anyway). I should have the old girl back on the road in a couple of weeks, and come summer time she will have a new coat of Pine Green. Cheers Bruno

I'm curious to know how many P5s there are around the world whose minders visit this forum. I'd also like to know where they are. So if you are not in the UK, where most of the cars would reside, please let us know and I'll endeavour to run a tally sheet. Following the name of each country is a link to the profile page of each forum member who has posted in this thread. I'd like to know how many cars you have, if they are P5 or P5B, and in which country you live. Even if you only visit the forum occasionally, or if you rarely or never post, please just tell us which P5 you have and if you're lucky enough to have more than one. You could also add as little or as much extra information as you wish. You may even discover someone else in your country that you weren't aware of. Perhaps if you could put the name of your country in the "Subject" heading when you reply. That will make it easier for anyone scanning through the posts. If you do find a fellow countryman anywhere on the site, click on their username and it will take you to their profile page where you can find links to their posts as well as their last log-in date. You may discover that they haven't visited the forum for a long time and are no longer active. Thanks, Warwick.

Someone may be able to save you some time by providing some links to good threads on the subject. I think Phil has posted quite a bit on both types and John W on the later type.

Hi Warwick. Thanks i will have a look. I do have plenty of info on rebuilding them, there are some owners who have converted over to a PBR VH44 booster with great results too. I will put a new kit through and see what happens. Regards Bruno

Bruno,
From memory, people such as Phil (philnottingham) have pointed out the design weaknesses and pitfalls when rebuilding these, so it's worth searching for that information.
Regarding the VH44 ... I know the 44 but not the VH40. Those that I've heard of who have converted to a local booster, it's been the VH40, but I'm not familiar with the difference.
My personal preference if faced with a failing original servo would be to put it aside for future rebuilding and refitting if originality became more important, and fit a suitable PBR booster.
