Dear Roverists. I have a question regarding the automatic choke device (AED). Since my P5B starts perfectly with the manual choke I want to get rid of the unit completely. The line that connects to the centre between the 2 carbs has been removed and plugged on the carb side. Now there is another (flexible) pipe, that runs to the lefthandside of the engine and then down between 2 pipes of the exhaust-manifold. (see picture). What is the use of this pipe and can i simply remove it? Has it something to do with carterventilation? Attachment Deleted

It's the hot air pick up for the aed. It's how the device gradually phases out as the temp increases. Easy enough to remove but also wouldn't hurt to leave in situ!
Hth?

Interesting. With mine, the AED's hot air pickup hose has simply been removed, no plug or whatsoever. I've always wondered as to whether that's a good thing ...
Cheers, Olaf

It is the heat exchanger/source for the AED nothing else, you can remove the pipe from the manifold if you wish the bolts will probably sheer off, it looks better IMHO than a pipe to nowhere

I'm just wondering as to whether it actually promotes dirt ingress (which I doubt would be a good thing).

Ok thanks a lot for your reply. I will remove the pipe completely. And the device itself of course. Regards, Karl Rigter

It's a dead end so nothing comes up the tube

It's a dead end so nothing comes up the tube LOL. Alright, I'll put a tiny little camera in it, for everyone that attempts to peek into it!

Hi All, My P5B had the AED removed ages ago. I have the heads off right now (another story) and am contemplating removing the hot air pipes that come off the exhaust manifold. I have one hot air pipe that goes to basically no-where, so easy decision to remove that one. The other feeds to a port on the offside carb elbow. I’m guessing i can remove that too and blank off the hole on the elbow? Have I got that right?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mark

Yes you can. Fill the hole, I used body filler and then resprayed the elbows with matching paint.

Make sure you blank off the manifold bolt holes with bolts as my bolt holes went through to internal manifold area giving a noisy manifold blow.
