Has anyone on here got experience of fitting the 4 speed auto from an LDV Ambulance to a P5B? I have a spare prop (2 piece with cage)and I'm looking to take it on Friday to be refurbished and balanced but also shortened. Does anyone know the length to shorten it by (having had it done or assisted in a conversion)? Is it the long prop or short prop that is shortened? Sorry for the questions... Hi Roy, Shortening and attaching the propellor shaft is about the last thing you want to do after fitting the ZF trans to your P5B. The Jag XJ40 trans (ZF) that I'll fit at some stage won't require any alterations to either its length or the flanges and will bolt straight up.
With any luck I believe yours will too. If the trans output flange is in the same place as the current BW35...then problem solved.
PS. I'm assuming you've measured and/or marked the relative position of the current assembly.

The reason I'm asking is because the conversion has been done already by lots of people to their P5s using the LDV Ambulance box. It was the easiest to get originally now LDVs have turned into the rare parts from a unicorn! So nowadays people will use the box from a jag or BMW and I cannot speak for that conversionor gearbox length, the LDV rwd box has a known length and is a known conversion. Hopefully someone has the details.. Thanks for the recommendations. The prop definitely needs shortening with this conversion, I just need the details! regards Roy

The measurement you need is somewhere on this forum because I'm sure I can remember posting it a good while back after being involved with doing the conversion using an LDV box. I can't remember what it was exactly but ISTR it was 80-something mm.

I am not really sure but i believe it was 86mm. The one i got shortened is the long one as you do not want to change the position of the the bearing. It is good to make a jig with the original in the car to maintain the correct driveshaft angle. Just make a piece of wood (with a half circle cut out) what you can put between the driveshaft and the subframe. Later you can use this jig to make the mounting bracket for the box to subframe connection Peter

88mm Roy. ( in standard 22 form )
Front section. Good advice on making a jig beforehand to establish the correct position before removing the BW box, the mounting plate on the cross member will need to be moved from the front, to the back.

Yes It will make the overall length longer by 13mm, so the prop would need 101mm chopped off.
