As a member of this forum I gather it is expected to show pictures of your P5, so not for the faint hearted, here is something a little different (and please don't take this too seriously it's just a bit of fun). I also thought others can see what taking on a restoration can involve. I am enjoying the challenge and don't mind sorting out the rusty bits. A restoration keeps me busy on many levels and is a great learning process. I have already completed a 1966 Beetle, a 1970 Corvette and now my 64 P5. The quality of P5's construction has taken me by surprise. There are little bits of leather on the door mechanism to stop squeaks and rattles. Interior trim has little pieces of material behind them to stop rattles. I like the quality of the interior. Then engine ticks over smooth after sitting since 1999. The P5 is a great car and I hope to have mine up to scratch soon.

Considerably worse than anything I have ever attempted to fix. Under here in Oz, that would probably be regarded as beyond hope. So shots of your progress would be brilliant.

A pity that the Rover quality of construction did not include rust prevention ! In 1971 I bought my first car, a 1960 Morris Minor for £135, I loved that car and spent many hours working on her, but every year she had to have welding to pass the MOT. When I bought my Rover in 1975 I was determined to prevent her from rust. I don't remember how many gallons of Waxoyl I sprayed onto her, but it was a lot. On one occasion I filled the sills with it and the first warm day it liquified, came out of the sills and covered the sides of the car. It still gets under my finger nails !

It's a testimony to the build quality of Rover P5's that it is possible to bring them back from the dead. I think of myself as lucky finding one in such good shape. I believe there are a number of people taking on restorations of this vehicle. Most of the good cars are already fixed up. Rusty ones are only left. It helps having good parts suppliers who love these cars and are willing to help get them back on the road. Today was spent working on the sills. I plan take pictures of the repair and will post if people are interested.

It's a testimony to the build quality of Rover P5's that it is possible to bring them back from the dead. I think you've got that wrong....I believe it should read, "It's a testimony to the ability of the restorer that it's possible to bring P5 Rovers back from the dead!

There was a decent bootlid offered on the club facebook page a couple of days ago. Would be better to replace and save you a lot of time. Rover P5 club on facebook....

"I'm the kind of guy" who likes the challenge of DIY. Yes it would be easy to replace but my preference is to keep as much original as possible. I hope to keep as much of the original paint. I don't mind the work.

Someone once told me when you start welding a rotten Rover like that, keep going until it’s all done, don’t leave it or you’ll find by the time you’re finished the first bit will be rotten again 😆😆 He always used ask what I was up to & if I told him I was busy with my Rovers he used to say to me “Oh those Rovers, You’re stark raving mad” Good luck with that project, the hard work will pay off in the end, I’ll have to try & find the pics of my P6, it scared a lot of people in the old P6 forum

Thanks for the encouragement. You say don't stop. I have enforced stoppage. I have unfortunately run out of welding wire. I hope to get some before the rust starts again.
