The cost of rechroming means good s/h ones command a high price.
I think if I was having to change a rear bumper now I'd go down the stainless steel route.

If yours is good but just needs chrome I would seriously consider getting your done as you know it will fit back on the car well. The other than that you could try one of the stainless ones from Vietnam. I'm hearing better stories about those now but it is thinner than the original. I have a couple of spare bumper blades which are not rusty but they would also definitely need rechroming (being at least 50 years old!). Best of luck Roy

If you have the rear bumper re-chromed it pays to find a company that has a large enough tank to take the whole bumper, otherwise they have to dip one end and then the other and then polish out the join, but that is usually visible to a critical eye !

I'm sure that finding a good used one is like the proverbial hen's teeth. My current bumper is "acceptable" at best and it's the best one I've come across in several years.

I had mine done one year ago, front, back and over-riders. I tossed up between two excellent companies, one in Kent, the other near'ish to Bristol. I chose Kent as they threw in collection and delivery. The rear bumper had distortion along the lower edge of the rear, as if driven over something solid. They repaired that very well indeed. Total cost £1524 inc. VAT. From the quote the rear bumper alone without need of repair was £400 plus VAT. From outside their collection area there would be transport costs on top.
What has put the price up substantially of recent has been rocketing cost to platers of Nickle. I did seriously consider the stainless steel option but decided on the original finish.
PM me if you want to discuss.

I have a couple of secondhand rear bumpers in storage. I repaired one a long while ago but cant remember what the other was like. I'll have a look and see if they are of use to anyone. I also have a load of BSW and AF sockets and spanners to dispose of,not chinese junk all English or German made. Anyone intersested can PM me but they are to go to enthusiasts not resellers.

There is a big Chroming factory in Nottingham. Its been there decades and still there today. Ive used them in the past for stuff on my other cars and they were always good and the quality excellent.
They are about 100 yrds away from the Basford tram crossing ( old train line ) cant remember the name but a google search will bring them up.
Regards,
P.s, ive just googled them, Nottingham Platers Ltd Southwark street Basford.

Yes got 4 stainless steel rear bumpers in this week, 2 sold already, the other two are up for grabs. Come with over riders, fillet strips over rider to bumper and fixing bolts to your frame. Give me a call if interested. Also have sets of chrome sprayed rostyle wheels with centres painted black on exchange.

Update I got the bumpers down, both are sound but need rechroming. At £900 or so a pair the new stainless ones make chroming look uneconomic. I have a pair on my car they look well but are very easily scratched. Chroming costs are now so much higher because although the materials have gone up in price the chemicals used are incredibly toxic and very expensive to dispose of,regulations now are far more restrictive than they were. This is why chroming is much cheaper in China where they probably just pour the chemicals down the nearest toilet.
