A few of the clips that hold the stainless steel waist trim on the side of the car have come off or missing, This is mainly down to the fact the pop rivets that hold them have corroded due to being made of aluminium. I've bought a few new clips but not sure what size the pop rivets should be to secure them. I'm a little confused to how the sizing works on these items. Can anyone help, please note my car is an early 3 litre and has the thinner trim. Thanks Clive

Use stainless pop rivets for a more permanent solution to your issue. Simply choose a pop rivet that fits in the hole. If the drilled hole is an 1/8" diameter choose a pop rivet that suits that diameter. To remove old rivets simply drill the head off (use a sharp 3/16" drill bit), then gently push/punch the remainder through the hole.

If you coat the inside of the trim and clip with Waxoyl, and cover the rivet head inside the guard with bitumen sealant, you should be good for a few decades.

Thanks for the info, what a horrible job that was! I don't know if it was the pop rivets/gun at fault or me but I managed to make a right pig's ear of it. The hole fitted a 3.2 mm rivet well but once in with the clip it was lose. On top of that the pin that I amuse should brake off flush with the head stood proud of the clip so I had to file it down because the side trim wouldn't clip on! I also managed the scratch the paint work! I'm normally good at this kind of thing but this was a most unpleasant task!
