While working on my door armrest mechanisms, I decided to take a look at the padding under the vinyl as it seemed to have shrunk and hardened.
Sure enough on removing the vinyl, the original foam seems to have degraded badly and is now hard as a rock and significantly shrunken compared to what I imagine itβs original dimension were.
I think maybe some high density polyethylene foam might be a reasonable replacement.
Does anyone have any history with renovating these?

I repacked mine with HD foam carpet underlay approx 5mm thick about 20 years ago - still good, resilient yet soft

I recovered my armrests as part of a complete retrim earlier this year. I used 1/4" upholstery foam which seemed to do the job pretty well.

I am thinking about recovering the arm rests and the door cards. I have good leather which I have already recovered the centre console and kick boards in. Any tips on covering the arm rests and door cards would be most appreciated. Many thanks. Craig.
