I have attached an audio file of how my 3 litre engine sounds when idling. I would be grateful for any opinions. I can hear some tappet noise but also a higher pitched whirring sound. Could that be coming from the distributor possibly? Attachment Deleted

Sounds like it! Balance Spring adrift under the baseplate?

Sounds like it! Balance Spring adrift under the baseplate? Thank you Phil, I will investigate further. Based on your experience would you say the level of tappet noise is normal or excessive?

I find tappet noise always seems amplified on recording so its difficult to say - these engines are quieter than most but its better to have slightly looser tappets than to tight

Very smooth sounding engine. I'd be happy with that. That slight noise could be anything. (Eg. Dry generator bush or bearing?)
* Use a length of garden hose (15" long) as a make shift stethoscope against one ear and place the other end near various components on the engine. It should amplify the noise that you're trying to locate.
*Old dry fan belts often cause weird noises. Spray the belt with some WD40 and it will quieten if the noise is emanating from there. It won't hurt the belt or make it slip.

On a semi-related note about engine noise: I notice that the idler pulley for the fan belt on my car seems slightly noisy (3-litre engine). I assume there is a ball bearing in there, but no way to lubricate it. Do these ever go bad and seize up? Is there a source to obtain or rebuild these?

Never had any problems with these or looked at lubricating them (yet)
