My speedometer stopped working for some reason. Is there a logical sequence of troubleshooting. I would prefer to follow those who have gone before rather than just diving in. My first thought was to open up the dashboard binnacle and see if the cable is still connected to the back of the speedometer, If so I was then going to disconnect the securing nut to expose the inner cable and determine whether this will rotate?

Pop the binnacle out & disconnect the cable then drive the car & see if the cable turns, if it does then grab the spinning end & see if you can stop it. If not then it’s a failure in the speedo head, if you can then it could be a broken cable just grabbing enough to spin when not under load, similarly & more likely (assuming 3 litres have one) the little angle drive on the gearbox could have failed. The most likely thing is the tiny input cable will have sheared, I had this recently with my 3.5 If this is the case then you need to work out why. The most likely causes are a seized speedo head, a tight or badly routed cable. In my case I had routed my cable badly when I had the engine & box out. I managed to repair mine using my speedo cable making tool. It took a couple of goes but I got there in the end.

As Stirling said, for some reason these angle speedometer gear drives which screw into the transmission seem to be weak points. I've broken two on my car. Moss Motors sells this part (same as for an MGB and others-part #021-511) but gives a special instruction note about the mandatory fitment of a copper washer ( mossmotors.com/media/instructions/021-511.pdf )which may be the cause. Of course, testing as Stirling describes is a necessary step for diagnosis. If the cable isn't turning, you'll have to crawl under to check the angle speedometer drive at the transmission.

You will find it a lot easier to unscrew the chrome round nut for the trip reset under the dash rail. This will allow the console to move a lot further forward
