I hesitate to raise this subject, knowing that it is an old chestnut and will likely cause more than a few groans. However, the tyres on my P5B are badly cracked where the treads reach the sidewalls and must be replaced. They are Pirelli P4000's with plenty of tread but now beyond safe use.
Whilst I am tempted to blow a large wad on a a set of Pirelli Cinturato's or Dunlop SP Sport's, I have already spent a huge sum on the dear old thing since purchase just over a year ago (mechanical rebuild, respray, new leather etc.) and the funds pot is getting rather low. I have been looking for decent but less expensive alternatives and I know the choice is very limited. Tyres by Galaxy, Hifly and Vredestein are all listed as available. I have never tried any of them on any vehicle, never mind a P5B. I would be interested to hear members' views on any of these and indeed on any other alternatives.

Everything rides on your tyres, mate. I suggest you get the best. All of that money on paint and leather won't mean much if the whole shebang slides off a wet road and disappears into the scenery...

I think that these are the corrct size; www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s1143p167069/Vredestein_Tyres_Car_Vredestein_Sprint_Classic_-_185_R15_91V_TL_Fuel_Eff_%3A_XC_Wet_Grip%3A_XC_NoiseClass%3A_XC_Noise%3A_XCCheck the date of manufacture of the tyres as it is recommended that a tyre has a shelf life of 6 years or 10 years when rolling on the car. There are tyres available for the cost of a couple of rounds of drinks but I would not put them on my car. Before I had Vredesteins I had some cheaper ones that had been purchased by the club and one of them developed a bulge in the tread. Having had a rear tyre loose pressure on the motorway is a terryfying (!) experience as the old Rover becomes uncontrolable. I would also advise fitting a tyre pressure monitoring kit. I have a Michelin and it beeps and screams as soon as the pressure in one of the tyres starts to differ from the others.

I am tempted to try Vredenstein's. However, I need to be sure that they are fully suited to the car and are not compromised in any way. Can anyone out there who has had them on a P5 for an extended period let us know their thoughts?

Geoff Arthur is your man for tyres. I had Vredesteins on my Rover - excellent tyres.

I have Vredesteins on my P6B for 3 years now. I find them excellent and mean to fit them to my P5 imminently. It has the added attraction that its' production facility is in Enschede, Netherlands, not some sweat factory in the Far East.

Very content with Vredestein (Sprint Classic). Have had them for eight years now, they look and feel still ok. At the time there was an option to obtain them with or without 'rubber bumper wall' (bit amiss for the correct term). They used to be cheaper too...

Yes, I have had a set for 2 or 3 years and they were factory fresh, which was a bonus. Many years ago I bought some very expensive crossplys from a specialist and they were several years old, they were OK then but it would concern me now.
The Vredesteins, although they have a chunky look, give a good ride and grip well. I would certainly have another set when I have worn these out.

I have a lot of faith in Vredestein tyres, I’ve used various ones over the years on a variety of cars. I nearly put sprint classics on my P5 as it already had them on the front, though they were misshapen probably due to inactivity of the car. The only reason I didn’t fit them was I spotted Michelin XVS-P on the internet, they were horrendously expensive but have that lovely kerb buffing ridge round the sidewalls for oldy worldy authenticity

Hi folks, Having run the P5 Club tyre scheme for many years I thought I would let you know my thoughts. Modern tyre rubber is fully synthetic and does not last like tyres of old with a high natural rubber content so 10 years is probably as long as you should consider using a tyre. If exposed to strong sunlight for long periods or left standing in one place, the lifespan will drop considerably. All tyres have date codes on the side walls so you can easily check their age. It is unlikely that you will wear tyres out on a P5 so usually they start to crack up and the carcase can disintegrate. The tyres used in the club scheme were initially from Kumho, then Hankook and finally Federal. All were good quality mid market brands and both Kumho and Hankook are fitted to new cars such as VW so not of questionable quality and that is an unfortunate thing to imply. I had a Kumho start to fail on my Coupe coming back from Roverfest in 2017 and discovered it was now 11 years old so past its usable age, the tread was starting to detach from the carcase, no big drama as it got me home at reduced speed. I bought a set of Vredesteins from Camskill to replace the Kumhos but they were all incorrectly manufactured and could not be balanced. The sales manager of Vredestein came to see me and collected the tyres and they refunded me directly. Apparently under the new ownership of Apollo Tyres India, they were having big quality problems at that time with misshapen carcases. I don't know if they are made in Europe or India now but I hope they are back to good quality. I put a set of Federals on as a temporary measure and they have been perfect ever since, an excellent tyre under all conditions but not currently available in our 185 80 15 size. Other tyre sizes and van tyres of the correct size do not usually work well on a P5. I had a chat to Camskill last week to check the current situation for another P5 owner and Camskill are very happy with Radar Dimax as a budget tyre at around £55 or Vedestein at £126 as a better brand. Vintage Tyres, Longstone and North Hants have other choices mostly at higher money. I replaced 2 Bridgestone Tyres on my modern car yesterday and this time went with Continentals. The Bridgestones were very grippy but lasted just 6,000 miles and at £140 each, that was not pleasing at all and the last time I bought Continentals they lasted well. I hope that helps. Geoff

My Volvo ate a pair of Bridgestones in 3000 miles. They’re a good grippy tyre but that’s the price you pay, my old tyre supplier used to say if it wears out quick it’s doing its job properly😆 I run uniroyal rain sports on it now & they are doing ok, though the fronts are ready to change again, but these front wheel drive Volvos are notoriously heavy on front tyres. I never new Vredestein had switched to India 😳 I used the old Ultrac (with the tree branch pattern) on my ZT-T & they had just the right combination of good roadholding & wear

My current bike came with Bridgestone tyres and not only did they not grip very well and made me ride badly, ie; braking for corners, but they wore out in half the time that my tyre of choice, Dunlop Road Smart, which generally give at least 10000 miles plus. Changing tyres was like changing bikes. My experience puts me off Bridgestone totally.

I have been happy recently with Continental on my other Volvo (an AWD XC70) and my Moto Guzzi bike so I will stick with them and they are European made. My tyre fitter tells me that some Matador tyres are identical to Continental as they come off the same production line yet are much cheaper so that is worth checking out. I have had Matador on a car before and they were very good. They all seem to be made in France.

I travel a fair few miles in my van and go through a set of tyres in quick shape. Having found continental the better tyre for my use. Just over 40,000 on the rear and I squeezed 27,000 out the front ones last time, checking the pressures is key mind you and I have pressure monitors which help keep an eye things. Budget tyres would be lucky to reach 8,000 before giving up!, so when you consider its only that small patch of rubber keeping on the straight and narrow at any given time it is well worth the extra to go for good tyres.
And now we are coming out of lockdown and able to get out and about check those fluid levels properly folks, don't risk driving it if it's showing low on the dipstick.

185 80 15's on mine now.
They are Dimax radar classics from camskill as you mention and I am very pleased as this is my first time fitting standard ish size to my car. They look good and seem to handle well. Unlike some press articles have stated they balanced easily. I could not justify the outrageous charges for vredesteins or michelins and as this car is a high days and holidays only fun thing I can't see any issues.
Dimax also do a 195 80 15 which really tempted me but the sidewall calculates up quite a bit higher than even the old crossplys.
On the subject of continental tyres I have had them on multiple cars and always found them to be poor. We have just ditched the originals on our discovery sport reverting to the Pirelli scorpions which I rate highly. As always I suspect it's a bit of personal choice and personal experience that helps us all form our choices!

Having weighed everything up and deciding to try Vredensteins, when I actually tried to find someone with stock at a sensible price I struggled. Having remembered others on here saying they rated Ovations highly I found that Camskill had them in stock. I have now had a complete set of four Ovations fitted and have covered about 200 miles on them. The car seems to handle well on them and stops as it should on dry roads; it will be interesting to see how it fares when we get some rain, not that I take it out in the wet if I can help it. At least I can stop worrying about having a blowout or the tread separating from the body of the tyre which was the reason for the change (previous tyres Pirelli P4000 205/70R15 and badly cracked). Pressures currently set at 32psi all round which seems about right. I shall be keeping an eye on wear.

Hankook still make the correct size radials around the world for our Rovers but were banned in EU. Now that UK has left I wonder if Hankook will begin to supply them here.

Just got Vredestein Sprint Classic 185/80R15 put on the P5B and what a pleasure compared to the old Cooper 205/75R15. Well, first of all they are round, which the old ones wasn't so much anymore. Also, they are not wobbly as the slightly too larger Coopers.
