I am now completing the restoration of my Car - however i would like to swap the engine for a very good mk 11 engine,I wonder if this is possible since mine has the Borg Warner auto box and the mk 11 obviously was mated to a DG autobox so im told.Any help wuld be very much appreciated !

Good morning - it is true that the MK II had the BW DG autobox. Mine is an MK IA auto with the DG box. The only real difference between MK I and MK II is the modified intake manifold and carbureter resulting in a higher output engine. Feel free to contact me on christopher.cappelen@uniservice.as for more info.

MkI and MK11 autos used a lower-compression engine (than the manual) to better match torque characteristics with the DG auto box but the MKIII auto used a standard compression engine with the BW35.

Very well observed ! and, in addition, the MK III engine had higher output than both the MK I and MK II engines, thus making the MK III the most powerful version of the in-line 6 cyl IOE engine devised by Maurice Wilks in the early 30'ies ...

Thinking about it,I seem to recall mention that the crankshaft is also different on the MKI and MKII autos.
I think it's been covered on here before, so 'search' might bring something up.
As far as I recall, the MKII (manual) and MKIII engines (manual & auto) were the same, the changes were made from MK1(A) to MKII; although I might be getting 'forgetful' now.

I heard the same thing, so I investigated with Jon Wadhams. The engine is the same for both manual and auto version. No difference at all. HOWEVER, there is an adapter plate made for the auto-version which enables the Torque Converter to bolt on to the adapter and hence the crankshaft.

The automatic engines have a lip on the end of the crank shaft, so it wont take a manual flywheel with out modification

It may well be safer to keep looking for a good Mk111 engine which seem quite rare now !

Even less so down here. I am onto my second one currently stripping it down. $300 for the engine and $400 freight to get it from Invercargill to Wellington. Supposed to be from a car that was in a smash 35 years ago with 55k miles. I think probably 155 going on the wear and the brand new clutch. However my plan was to bore it and it looks like it is ok for that.

It may be irrelevant to the topic, but compared to Mk1, MkIIa and b, the MkIIC and MkIII engines have a different crank journal diameter in the region of the rear main seal.

Mk 2c manuals had the improved big journal crankshafts and in all respects was the same as the Mk3 (autos had the big journal crankshaft but still different at the flywheel end!)

If it is of interest. I have a complete Mk3 engine and Auto box, removed from a Donor car. I did intend to put it in my Coupe but sadly that has now gone. There is more or less a complete system up for grabs - I need to move out of my workshop.
