Is there any method to translate a RV8 engine number to what engine, year, type, HP, it is (or rather was when new)?
The number in question is 11A37616 and is believed to come from an SD1.

According to Google, it is a ; 9.35:1 comp ratio from a 1979/80 SD1 automatic

Correct, from my SD1 records it's an early 9.35:1 SU carb engine for an automatic (early manuals were 10A...). Judging by the number I'd guess that it might actually be from a 1978/79 car.
They were 155bhp @ 5,250 rpm and 198 lb/ft torque @ 2,500rpm. The SU carbs were SU HIF6. Originally it would have been mated to a BW65 gearbox and if that's still fitted, it should have an 021G prefix, whereas the later BW66 had 068E prefix.

Thanks!
Do you have this from a book and another reference? The engine is going into an MGB, and the Danish authorities to approve this modification has decided to be very picky (they aren't always) and insist on a document stating the power of the actual engine number.

Jens
Apologies for the delay in replying as I've been 'offline' for a while and have only just seen your comment.
The information came from James Taylor's book on the RoverSD1, which includes a section on the RV8 engine numbers/dsecifications.
I've re-read what I wrote and it reads as if I might have access to official records, which I don't!
