Hey all Just bought a 1972 P5B. Drove down from Edinburgh to London and around for the last couple of weeks. Yesterday it dies pulling into the main road. Had a brief inspection, electrics not my forte. Fuel pumping. No spark at plugs or coil. Lucas 35DE8 Opus fitted from new? Didn't know at the time so bought a Lucas DLB105 and condenser and points THEN discovered it was electronic. Then when I took the coil off this flat silver Lucas 9RB falls off from behind it and pulls out the only wire on one of the three terminals and I don't know which one it came from! So! I have a coil that isn't good for the distributor that I am not sure works and a ballast resistor (what even is that) that I have a wire missing from! What fun! I am thinking I'll go back to standard points to be honest. So, I need a new distributor. Is that the 35D with longer drive gear for my year? Then I can use the DLB105 I am guessing? Can I then ditch the ballast resistor? Or is that still needed? There was a red/blue wire attached to it but the print quality of my supplement workshop manual is not good enough to read the wire colours on the diagram! Any help appreciated as the poor thing is stuck on the road round the corner. If anyone knows what the blue/red wire is and where it should go if I can ditch the 9BR that would be awesome.

This is difficult to answer as there are so many questions. It sounds as if someone has been mucking around with it as originally it would have had points and I presume a thief proof coil, which I understand does not have a ballast resistor. It might be best to find a local mobile mechanic who would be able to check it out.

That's a really confusing ramble there Jem. I'm guessing from what I can glean from your technical dilemma that car has an SD1 Rover V8 and electronic distributor fitted to it. This schematic may assist.

As such the SD1 set-up needs no ballast resistor and a 12V high output Sports coil
