Now I have the rebuilt wheel cylinders back, reinstalling them has posed a problem I seem to recall when I last did the brakes over 30 years ago. THe standard bleed nipples (3/8 x 24 unf x 33mm long) are just a bit short and the nut to tighten them is fouling on the new rubber dust gaiter on the back of the wheel cylinder preventing proper tightening as the rubber is in the way.
I'm looking to get longer bleed nipples as I don't want to have to cut away part of the new gaiter, but the longest I can find with a named size are 38mm long, which might be long enough to clear the gaiter, but I'm not sure.
Anyone had the same issue or is this just me?

You should be able to push the rubber boot down so that you can get a ring spanner on the bleed screw. I use a cranked ring spanner which works well.

The problem is that the rubber boot is only just wide enough to get the threaded part of the bleed nipple through and sits under the nut, so you cannot put the boot on with the bleed nipple in situ. This means if you tighten the nut it will just scrunch up the boot sitting below it.
Anyway, I've ordered 37mm long bleed nipples so the nut part should be a few mm above the boot and can be fitted after the rubber boot is installed and tightened without screwing down on the rubber.

Having re-measured the bleed nipples that came with the rebuilt wheel cylinders, they are closer to 31 mm long not 33mm as I mentioned earlier.
In any event I ordered a pair of 37mm long nipples and they can be threaded into the bleed nipple socket of the wheel cylinder with the rubber dust cover already in place. When tightened the nut sits a couple of mm above the rubber dust cover, which no longer gets in the way of the bleed nipple being secured.
So that's made me happy!

I have always fitted the long nipples as fitted to the front callipers. It makes undoing the nipple so much easier and less likely to slip and round off the corners
