Hi, do you recognise this beastie? It's the rear axle breather. You need to check this is working to get the best from your differential. When I removed mine you could hear the release of air pressure; mine was covered in paint. You have to admire the ingenuity of the Rover engineers; the amount of time put into the design and manufacture of such a small item. There is a little ball bearing inside which moves up and down letting the pressure out and not allowing anything in. It is important to let your axle breath. Attachments:

A fine little one way valve but still be aware not to overfill the differential with oil otherwise the excess will also want to exit at this point.
